Jin Ong elated over "Abang Adik" selection for the Oscars
7 Oct - Jin Ong is elated over news that his movie, "Abang Adik" has been selected to represent Malaysia to the Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film.
The filmmaker, who was asked about the movie being submitted on behalf of the country, stated that he is honoured to be chosen to represent Malaysia and thank FINAS (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia) for their confidence in his film.
"I can't say what will happen next. What's more important is that we have taken one step forward, so the next focus is to get a nomination and see where that goes," he said.
At the same time, the filmmaker admitted that it would be a dream come true if the movie makes it to top five.
"The Academy Awards is the highest achievement in movie-making, and of course I hope we can get that chance. But for now, let's take it one step at a time," he added.
The movie, which is also produced by actress Angelica Lee (Lee Sinje) and stars Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren and Malaysian actor Jack Tan, tells the story of two undocumented orphans living in Malaysia - a deaf older brother who resigns himself to poverty and a younger brother who wants more in life.
It has won various accolades outside of Malaysia including at the New York Asian Film Festival, Udine's Far East Film Festival, and the Black Dragon Critics Award. It also made RM5.7 million in Malaysia, RM14.6 million in Taiwan, RM1.55 million in Hong Kong, and RM 2.2 million at the box office in China.
