Jenny and Dave Marrs Announce Their Latest Series on HGTV

Living a more sustainable life doesn't have to be daunting. Just take it from Jenny and Dave Marrs, who have built easy habits—that have a big impact—into their everyday lives. Whether they're teaching their kids eco-friendly practices at home or implementing new technology into their work projects, the Fixer to Fabulous stars prove anyone can take steps toward bettering the environment without sacrificing comfort.

"Sustainability, the word—sometimes, it can feel overwhelming,” Jenny tells House Beautiful. "Oh my gosh! What do I have to give up? What do I have to do?" She continued, "But really, it's about teaching simple things like turning the light off when you leave the room and being conscious of how you're using water and turning it off when you're not using it."

Those quick changes only take a few seconds, but they add up. "We have five kids and so obviously, we really want to ensure that we're teaching them how to care for the natural resources we have here on Earth," Jenny adds. “We want to make sure we're taking care of the environment and being good stewards for their future."

Since the Marrses raise animals and have a garden where they grow their own vegetables on their farm, they also practice composting to improve their soil. Another garden-friendly tip they recommend: Leave a container out to collect rainwater that you can use to water your plants.

Now, Jenny and Dave have taken their dedication to the environment a step further with a new series on HGTV called the Sustainability Series. In the six-part miniseries, which premieres on October 9 (at 9:39 p.m. ET to be exact), Dave teams up with Marc Bellanger from HVAC systems manufacturer Daikin to demonstrate ways anyone can make their homes more comfortable and sustainable—whether you live stateside or across the globe. "We basically go through some of the smallest little changes that you can make as an individual or a family to really help create a sustainable future—and some of the newest technologies that we are using in building and construction to really kind of push that needle forward," Dave explains.

A big chunk of home energy usage comes from heating and cooling. "If we can affect that and lower that impact without sacrificing comfort, that's how we really start to move the needle," Dave says.

The Marrses have Daikin technology in their own home, and they're implementing it in houses on their show. "Jenny and I feel like we need to practice what we preach," Dave says. "We're seeing the noise reduction. We're seeing the energy savings. We're seeing the comfort. I'm going to preach to the mountains about that stuff.”

Dave notes that sustainability efforts from big companies like Daikin may seem like "way-out-there technology" right now, but he suspects it'll become commonplace in the next few years. He explains: "We've done this in the past. You think about insulation standards, how they've gone up. You think about creating comfortable envelopes for houses—stuff that was way out there 10 years ago but now is just the standard."
