Jennifer Lopez's Wedding Announcement Confirms Funny Girl Is Having a Moment

Jennifer Lopez confirmed news of her Vegas wedding to Ben Affleck with a simple phrase: "Sadie!"

For theater fans, the reference was immediately clear: Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, having just married Nick Arnstein, sings, Mrs. Arnstein, Mrs. Arnstein what a beautiful, beautiful name / Sadie, Sadie, married lady / See what's on my hand / There's nothing quite as touching / as a simple wedding band.

Lopez is now definitely a married lady, and confirmed she is going by Mrs. Affleck. She clearly took another lyric—a simple wedding band—to heart, opting for just a classic white gold band as her wedding ring.

She also directed fans to her newsletter, "On the JLo," where she shared details and photos of her wedding dresses. "We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out love is patient. Twenty years patient," Lopez wrote. "Exactly what we wanted."

Lopez and Affleck have been engaged before, and postponed their September 2003 wedding due to "excessive media attention" surrounding the nuptials. Their July 2022 wedding—in Las Vegas, extremely low-key—was the opposite of "excessive media attention." Instead, she announced they tied the knot with a simple photo from bed and a reference to Funny Girl.

Lopez is a longtime Broadway fan, explaining last year, "Musicals were a part of the tapestry of my childhood." She's currently working with her producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas to develop new projects based on classic musicals, like Oklahoma! and The Sound of Music.

She's also a longtime Barbra Streisand fan. In a 2016 interview, Lopez shared if she were going to audition for American Idol, she would sing "My Man" from Funny Girl."I love that song," Lopez said. "I think it would've shown off my voice but would've also shown a side of me people didn't know."

She's covered Streisand's Funny Girl songs before. In the "One World: Together At Home" concert from April 2020, Lopez chose to perform a different Funny Girl song, "People," while wearing a sweater with Streisand's face on it:

Earlier this year, Lopez revealed she met Streisand when she joined Affleck at an Oscar party in the early 2000s. "I went with Ben, and I met Barbra Streisand for the first time. She came up to me and I was like, 'Oh my God. I’m such a huge fan," she recalls. "And she goes, ‘How do you do it?’… You know, be so famous?’ And I was really puzzled by her questions. I was like, ‘Well you’re Barbra Streisand!'"

JLo aside, Funny Girl is in its own dramatic news cycle. Current Funny Girl star Feldstein recently took to her Instagram to announce she'd be leaving the production early. A day later, producers shared Michele would be taking over the role of Fanny, starting September 6, joined by Tovah Feldshuh as Mrs. Brice.

While it's unclear if Lopez is following the controversial news, the music superstar would definitely be #TeamBarbra above all.
