Over the past 17 years working in the beauty business, I've interviewed dozens of celebrities. While doing so, I've come to learn that most of them, have pretty extensive skincare routines that include budget-breaking creams and fancy professional treatments (I mean, you can't blame them). I knew the notoriously nice Jennifer Garner would have some down-to-earth beauty secrets (she just seems so real, right?!) but I was shocked when she shared that her a.m. routine only consisted of two steps.

Her refreshingly fuss-free morning routine starts with Hydro Boost Fragrance-Free Hydrating Cleansing Gel ($12; target.com), which she keeps in the shower, followed by one of her favorite sunscreens: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Moisturizing Serum ($15; target.com). “It does a lot of things at once—it’s a primer, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen—we love a multitasker,” she explains.

So why does sunscreen rank so high on her list? "This is my anthem for May and has been for a decade and a half but you really have to have sunscreen or you can’t go outside," she says. "There’s not a hat or anything that’s enough. It’s a health issue; it’s not just because you don’t want to have wrinkles—whatever reaches you, great, but ultimately, it’s about your health." The idea of protecting her skin is so near and dear to heart that she hands it out frequently. "I'm always giving away sunscreen," she says. "I have these sunscreen kits in my car with travel-size Neutrogena sunscreen that I give out to unhoused people if I run into them. The kids and I made them." (Yes, Jennifer Garner is, in fact, the sweet soul you thought she'd be.)

Her p.m. routine is equally as chill. She double cleanses using a makeup removing wipe, then the gel, and finishes with the brand's Rapid Wrinkle Repair ($28; target.com). "It’s so good," she raves, adding "I use it all the way down my chest, because it’s not crazy expensive." She noted that although she's built up tolerance for using retinol every night, she switches between that and the Hydroboost Water Cream ($20; target.com). "I think hyaluronic acid and retinol and are two of the main stays for aging skin to bring hydration to your face and then encourage your cells to turn over to give you fresh cells," she says.

Just like us, she also loves a bargain. “I so believe you can have amazing skin from a drugstore," Jennifer says. "We all get sold this crazy bill of goods that it needs to be not even from a department store but that you have to buy it from your dermatologist for a thousand dollars but the things you’re spending your money on haven’t been researched nearly as much as Neutrogena. The labs are incredible; I’ve seen them with my own eyes and met the brilliant people who are bringing these incredible ideas to life and then testing, testing, testing. The company has donated more than 1 million dollars to the Melanoma Research Foundation.”

"At this point in my life, it would have to be an eyebrow pencil," she says. "They start to thin so just filling them in so you have eyebrows." Her go-to: Westman Atelier Bonne Brow ($38; westman-atelier.com).

Fragrance

"Adir [her hairstylist] gave me Gypsy Water 15 years ago and everyone has it but I use it because he gave it to me and my kids think it smells like me,” she says. Byredo Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum ($220; byredo.com) has notes of lemon, pepper, and vanilla.

"I do The Limit. It’s online or if you’re in New York, it’s in Chelsea and it’s HITT and dance cardio but I do it on Zoom almost every day. It’s an hour but she also has on demand so you can stack yourself an amazing workout.”

Self-care activity

“I want to be outside. Really true self care is being outside with my kids. Last night, for Mother’s Day, we went to an Angel’s City game and they were all doing their own things. One was reading next to me; one was doing homework in the stands, you know, tucked away and that’s OK. We’re here, outside, the vibes in that stadium are amazing and so that felt like self-care.”
