You may remember reading about a Friends theory that recently went viral on Twitter. Friends fan Claire Willett started a 100-tweet thread explaining why she believed that Joey and Rachel should have ended up together in the series finale. But Jennifer Aniston just weighed in on said theory, and listen — she’s not having it.

Aniston talked to Elle about husband Justin Theroux, her wellness routine, and of course, the age-old Joey and Rachel debate. When asked if Aniston was one of the many secretly hoping that her character and Joey, played by the hilarious Matt LeBlanc, would end up together, Aniston made her thoughts very clear.

“No! No, no,” Aniston said. “They tried! I think there was a moment when Joey and Rachel got together that maybe it could [have] happened, but it didn’t. It was Ross and Rachel all the way.”

But as Willett pointed out, Ross wasn’t the best friend to Rachel when they weren’t in a relationship. He often hid messages to her from other men and wasn’t that supportive of her career, whereas Joey was quite the opposite.

Joey always looked out for Rachel and his other female friends. He even told Ross to quit it — Rachel’s not interested!

“I just don’t think Joey and Rachel could have made it,” Aniston continued. “I think it was more physical than emotional with them. They were friends with benefits, and they left it at that.”

Aniston makes a good point. When Joey and Rachel finally got together during Season 10, there were a lot of external factors and emotions involved and, perhaps at that point, their romantic relationship wasn’t as genuine as it could have been earlier in the show.

Honestly, being on Team Phoebe and Joey since day one, we’re okay with the overall turnout.
