Jennifer Aniston: I Am Not a ‘Sad, Childless Human’

Jennifer Aniston has had enough. Enough with false tabloid headlines, scrutiny, and body shaming that has somehow come along with being a celebrity these days. She made that very clear in July when she wrote her “For the Record” op-ed for Huffington Post.

The 47-year-old actress penned the piece after what seemed like the millionth “Jennifer Aniston’s Finally Pregnant!” headline started circulating online. Now, the Office Christmas Party star is opening up to Marie Claire about her decision to speak out over the summer.

“My marital status has been shamed; my divorce status was shamed; my lack of a mate had been shamed; my nipples have been shamed,” she explained. “It’s like, ‘Why are we only looking at women through this particular lens of picking us apart? Why are we listening to it?’ I just thought, ‘I have worked too hard in this life and this career to be whittled down to a sad, childless human.‘”

This isn’t the first time the Friends star has candidly discussed the topic of kids.

“I don’t like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women — that you’ve failed yourself as a female because you haven’t procreated,” she told Allure in 2014. “I don’t think it’s fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t mothering — dogs, friends, friends’ children.”

“This continually is said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself that I don’t want to be a mother, and how selfish that is,” she said. “Even saying it gets me a little tight in my throat. I have a lot of friends who decided not to have children, who can’t have children, or are trying but are having a difficult time. There’s all sorts of reasons why children aren’t in people’s lives, and no one has the right to assume. It’s quite rude, insulting and ignorant.”

Right now, Aniston has a pretty good life with hubby Justin Theroux.

“Why is he the right person for me? All I know is that I feel completely seen, and adored, in no matter what state,” she told Marie Claire. “There’s no part of me that I don’t feel comfortable showing, exposing. And it brings forth the best part of myself, because I care about him so much.”

She added, “And he’s such a good person. It hurts me to think of anything hurting him.”
