When you're a rock star, you usually roll with some very famous friends. Paul McCartney hangs out with Dave Grohl. Taylor Swift and Ice Spice go to each other's shows. The list goes on. Lenny Kravitz? Well, he's on another level. His roster of confidants includes Denzel Washington, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Beyoncé, and Jay-Z.

In Kravitz's new cover story with Esquire, a few of his closest friends opened up about the musician's impact on their lives, including Washington and Jay-Z. "I don’t know what the definition of a great friend is," Washington said, "but I am sure there is a picture of Lenny Kravitz next to the words." Washington doesn't remember how he first met Kravitz, and neither does Jay-Z. It doesn't matter—when Kravitz is your friend, you keep him close.

“I look at him as someone who stuck to their guns," Jay-Z added. "This is what I like. This is the type of music I like to create. You always applaud that: someone who stays and does what they do and doesn’t follow trends. Someone who has that confidence in what they’re doing is very rare."

We'll leave you with a story. This past summer, Kravitz and Jay-Z convened for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour stop in Paris. (Which sounds like a dream I had once.) "That was a great night," Jay-Z recalls. "B in Paris was super special." After the show, Jay-Z and a few others sang "Happy Birthday" to Kravitz—who didn't even tell the group it was his birthday. Leaving the spotlight to Beyoncé? Now that's a true friend.
