Jay Slater missing – latest: Locals report teen ‘watching Euro 2024 matches’ in Tenerife after last contact

Spanish police have spoken to several people who said they may have seen Jay Slater watching Euro 2024 matches after his last contact with friends, a local mayor has said.

Emilio Jose Navarro, mayor of the town of Santiago del Teide, said officers have interviewed a number of people who believe they saw the 19-year-old.

Police are examining grainy CCTV footage from the town, which is around three-and-a-half miles from the mountainous Rural de Teno park - the apprentice bricklacker's last known location - to determine whether it is a possible sighting.

The image, shared by the family to media outlets, shows a person walking through town and was captured around 10 hours after Jay's phone last pinged.

Mr Slater’s family also gave a statement through a spokesperson on Wednesday afternoon, telling reporters in Tenerife they are “utterly broken” but “very united”.

18:38 , Tom Barnes

Fake rumours of a body being found in the hunt for Jay Slater had spread like wildfire across Facebook, TikTok and other social media sites as thousands of users share disinformation.

But distastful pranks like this could cause a fatal distraction with days going by since Jay was last seen and friends of the teenager begged for people to keep up the massive search along the rocky hillsides of Tenerife full of treacherous ravines and cacti.

‘Jay’s parents will be fearing the worst’, says man whose son disappeared in Ibiza

18:08 , Tom Barnes

The father of a young yachtsman who went missing in Ibizia more than four years ago says Jay Slater’s parents “will start fearing the worst” in their desperate search for their son.

Mark Garland rushed to get a flight to the Spanish island with his two daughters and other son after he received a call to say his son, Ben, had disappeared while filming waves near Portinatx.

The family, joined by several of Ben’s friends, spent two weeks with police during a major search operation that centred on the rocky coastal point the 24-year-old had left his motorbike on 21 January, 2020.

However, hopes of finding him alive faded on the discovery of his watch on the coastline, then his jacket in the water. Mr Garland believes his son was swept out to sea.

17:35 , Tom Barnes

Private investigator Mark Williams-Thomas has been speaking to reporters in Tenerife today.

He aid the 19-year-old’s family members have been putting up pictures and posters around the island are responding to as many enquiries as they can.

He added: “They still live with the hope that Jay will return and that he is not safe but still alive.”

Renewed appeal for information

17:00 , Sian Elvin

Mr Williams-Thomas, on behalf of the family, urged anyone who may have information to come forward.

He told reporters in Tenerife: “This is about finding Jay and we need as many people as possible to get involved, and I would urge as another appeal... There are people out here who know more.

“There are people out here who have information who have seen Jay, who had contact with Jay whilst he was here.

“If you were in those clubs on that evening or in the early hours of that morning, please come forward.”

Social media sleuths urged to ‘think before you post'

16:33 , Sian Elvin

Speaking to members of the press pack, Mr Williams-Thomas urged internet conspiracy theorists to consider the feelings of Jay Slater’s family.

He told reporters including The Independent’s Holly Evans: “There are people out there who have been vile. I’ve listened to messages and read messages from people, there are people out there who have phoned up and said we’ve got Jay hostage, we’ve got Jay captive and they need to pay.

“There are some really vile people who have done that, they’ve tried to hack some of the social media sites, they’ve attacked some of the family. This is unacceptable. You’ve got a young lad who is missing and the family deserve respect. I would urge anyone on social media to think before you post.”

Family ‘utterly broken’ but mission remains to find Jay Slater alive

16:06 , Sian Elvin

Mark Williams-Thomas, a private investigator, spoke to the press in Tenerife this afternoon on behalf of Jay Slater’s family, including The Independent’s Holly Evans.

He told reporters: “They are a very, very united family and they are very supportive and their one mission is to find out what happened to Jay.

“They still live with the hope that Jay will return and that he is not safe, but still alive. They themselves have been out searching and have put out pictures and posters and of course, they are responding to as many enquiries as they possibly can.”

He added they had provided him with an “in-depth insight” into what had happened in the hours leading up to his disappearance.

Asked how the family have been coping, he responded: “They are utterly broken, having done this many times and having been a family liaison officer, they are an incredibly united family.

“Not just in terms of the family but also the friends that are here to support. They are all very focused in terms of finding Jay. The problem is they are now without information, a lot of information was coming in initially but they are now without much information.”

“Jay has been with us since he left school and is liked by all. He’s a valued member of our team and we stand by him.”

“The picture being painted of him is just not true. The fact is he’s a 19 year old lad missing in a foreign country. He needs to be back home where he belongs. Come on Jay we are all praying for you.”

‘I know how Slater family feel’ Father speaks of hurt as son vanished on Ibiza

15:19 , Barney Davis

Mark Garland’s son Ben had been out for a ride on his Harley Davidson motorbike to film waves near Portinatx on the north of the island before he disappeared on 21 January 2020.

His jacket was found in the water three days later, and Mr Garland believes his son was swept out to sea.

He told Sky News: “It’s the not knowing, it’s a never-ending nightmare, it’s torture, absolute torture. It’s something I wouldn’t wish on anybody.

“Jay’s parents will be feeling empty, they’re going to be tired. They will be confused, they will just be wanting answers.

“It’s such a traumatic experience.”

Asked if he had any advice for Mr Slater’s parents, he said: “I would tell them never give up and to get some sleep, that’s the main thing. I didn’t sleep properly, I was absolutely worn out every single day, physically and emotionally.

“I hope and pray Jay is found safe and well.”

Ex detective speaks on how he would have investigated Jay Slater case

Former detective Steve Gaskin told the Mirror: “If we treat this like a murder from the outset, then if it turns out not to be then nothing’s lost, we only have a few hours - people call it the golden hour, but really it’s the golden 24 hours - to gather forensic evidence before it’s too late.

“I’d want to know what he’d had from breakfast. Why has a 19-year-old bricklayer gone missing? What was he doing there? I would want to know everything about him. Who was the last person to see him? Check all their backgrounds too. I’d be speaking to police in the UK. Has he got a criminal record, here or in Spain? What do we know about him?”

But with its rocky cliff faces and harsh terrain, the island also has a dangerous side with completely inaccessible areas.

Briton Tom Beckett, who is familiar with the area where Jay Slater last used his phone, said the teenager may not have reached Santiago del Teide where the latest supposed image was taken.

“Had he been on the road, he would have been seen by numerous tourists. It’s a very narrow road so they wouldn’t have missed him, they would have seen him,” Mr Beckett told Reuters.

Spanish locals know little about Jay Slater disappearance

12:51 , Sian Elvin

Holly Evans reports from the scene in Tenerife:

Despite the interest among British press and tourists, Spanish locals appear to know very little about the disappearance. While Jay Slater’s photo has been plastered onto ATMs and bus stops, the Spanish police have made very few comments on the case and not much is known about the progression of the investigation.

While a group of British people from Manchester on holiday told The Independent last night that they had been checking the Facebook group chats daily, locals appear confused by the press attention.

Adela, a cafe worker in the tourist area of Los Cristianos, shook her head and simply said: “People always get lost in the mountains if they’re not careful, it just happens.”

Speaking from his office in the town hall, local mayor Emilio Navarro stated his belief that Jay Slater had not reached Santiago del Teide.

“The Guardia Civil sent us an email asking for our security cameras. We could not give it to them as they are organised through a separate company, so the police are speaking to them. But that CCTV picture is not from us and I do not recognise that place - I do not think it is in Santiago del Tiede and he is not here.

A construction worker who is familiar with the area, he pointed out to the cafes and small bars that run through the high street of the small town.

“There is a tourist information desk he would have passed. There are buses, signposts for taxis. There is a bar and cafes for food and help. Where did he go if he came here? I have a son and my heart is with his family.”

Tucked into the mountainside, an elderly Spanish couple showed the view from their back terrace which overlooks a dramatic ravine, Holly Evans reports live from the scene in Masca, Tenerife.

Four police officers can be seen trawling through the shrubbery with a sniffer dog, the only signs of the search ongoing in this area.

When asked if they thought the police search was dwindling, the couple said they believed it was still in full force, and that a helicopter and sniffer dogs had been spotted searching the area.

The house, which is located just north of Masca and deep in the mountains off a rural path, is their holiday home and they arrived four days to see the police search taking place.

‘Narrow and dramatic drops’ surround main road

Tuesday 25 June 2024 12:53 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Holly Evans reports live from the scene in Masca, Tenerife:

The area is a difficult terrain to navigate, small paths wind off the main road into the mountains but they are narrow and dramatic drops open up unexpectedly on either side, she writes.

Once leaving the main road, the bushes are coarse and there are brambles and cacti everywhere, which is hampering the efforts of search teams and rescue workers.

Over the last two days, Jay Slater’s father has travelled to Santiago del Tiede and has been seen putting posters around the small town, before also visiting the search site near Masca.

As well as rescue workers, friends and journalists, the search has also attracted internet sleuths and conspiracy theorists.

Speaking from Santiago del Tiede, one couple, who described their interest in ‘dark tourism’, said they had travelled to the scene for the last 3 days to observe the search given the unusual background to Mr Slater’s disappearance.

‘Hikers go missing every summer’: Tenerife locals speak to The Independent

Tuesday 25 June 2024 11:03 , Maryam Zakir-Hussain

Our reporter Holly Evans is in Tenerife speaking to locals and tourists about the search for Jay Slater, as the teenager remains missing over a week after his disappearance.

Speaking from a cafe located next to the main square, one local woman Anita told The Independent: “We often have hikers go missing, every summer it is the same.

“Police come for a week and search and then they go - sometimes it can take months for a body to be found as the mountains are too difficult to search.

“People have said there was a sighting of him here, but no one knows anything - his family come here but there’s nothing to show he is here, as far as I know no shop or cafe has seen him.”
