Japanese idol urges fans to use deodorant after smelly meet-and-greet

When it comes to fan meet-and-greet events, getting pushed around or swallowed by a swarm of cameras, mobile phones and frantic arms flailing in the air is common. The least one could do is to shift to another area. But what about body odour that fills the whole venue?

After receiving a complaint from a female fan after a handshake event, Kaori Matsumura of popular Japanese idol group, SKE48 decided to take matters into her hands with this special “fan service”.

“Thank you for attending the handshake event. But we have a severe problem – we received a complaint! A female fan who was queuing up said she could not stand the smell in the venue and hoped something can be done about it. People usually do not notice their own body odour. But we, including the members of SKE48, should take note of it! Let’s get these two products at the drug store and deal with this problem!”

Accompanying the tweet are two different brands of deodorant, CBIC’s Deonatulle and Shiseido’s Ag+. As spray cans are banned from the fan events, Matsumura also recommended fans to use powder sheet type such as Gatsby, and roll-on type which has Ag+ as well.

In response to this “fan service” – which seems to be directed at male fans – many have pointed out that female fans have to take note of their body “odour” too. This includes the wearing of perfume. It is a whole other debate altogether, as to what smells nice and what does not.
