James Wan Talks Aquaman: “I Love The Idea Of Being The Underdog”

James Wan is well aware that Aquaman, the DC Comics character whose solo movie he is set to direct, is widely regarded one of the naffest superheroes around.

Happily, this has not put Wan off bringing the derided Atlantean adventurer to the big screen. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Speaking to MTV News, the director discusses “what potential I saw in this character… As we all know, Aquaman is somewhat the butt of the joke in the superhero world. There’s something cool about that.

“I love the idea of being the underdog, coming in with a take on this underdog character and completely blow people’s expectations away. Like, ’Oh, you thought he was going to be a wimpy character? No no no.’ It’s going to be so cool.”

Well, given that Warner Bros and DC had already cast ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Conan the Barbarian’ veteran Jason Momoa in the role, the odds of people calling the character a wimp have already dropped significantly.

One thing that remains something of a mystery about the ‘Aquaman’ solo movie is whether or not it will tell the character’s origins. This is a moot point, as - following his very brief cameo in ‘Batman V Superman’ - Momoa will debut the role proper in ‘Justice League’ first.

Wan isn’t giving too much away, but does hint that the solo film will delve into his beginnings just a bit.

“There’s ‘Justice League’ that happens before it, so I have to be respectful to that. But in a lot of ways… it’s a continuation but there are origin elements as well — and that’s the story that I’m excited to tell.”

No story details have been revealed, but we do know Momoa will be joined by Amber Heard as Aquaman’s wife Mera.

Having made his name as a fairly low budget horror director on ‘Saw,’ ‘Insidious’ and ‘The Conjuring,’ Wan reached blockbuster director status with last year’s ‘Fast & Furious 7.’ His next film, ‘The Conjuring 2,’ opens in UK cinemas on 17 June.

Meanwhile, we’ll next see Aquaman when ‘Justice League Part 1′ opens in November 2017, to be followed by ‘Aquaman’ in July 2018.
