James Wan Hints He’ll Direct Giant Monster Movie

‘Fast & Furious 7′ director James Wan has teased plans to make a giant monster movie at some point in the near future.

The Malaysia-born filmmaker, who started out making comparatively low-budget horror movies such as ‘Saw’ and ‘Insidious’ before breaking into the blockbuster market with this year’s fuel-injected billion dollar blockbuster, dropped the hint in direct response to a follower on Twitter.

Asked why he had never ventured into giant monster territory despite having spoken of his love for the genre, Wan replied, “Patience, my friend. In due time. Closer than you know.”

Naturally this sparked plentiful speculation from followers as to just what this project might turn out to be - and just when Wan would be likely to get to work on it, given how busy his schedule appears to be.

The director is set to shoot the sequel to his 2013 horror movie ‘The Conjuring’ this autumn, after which he’ll be hotfooting it straight back into blockbuster territory, teaming up with actor Jason Momoa on the solo movie for Warner Bros/DC’s ‘Aquaman.’

Beyond that, Wan is also linked to a live-action adaptation of influential anime series ‘Robotech’ - which led some fans to ponder whether his recent tweet might be alluding to the giant robot action that film will involve, or if he’s hinting at sea monsters in ‘Aquaman.’

However, our spider-sense tells us Wan is pointing toward an entirely separate movie - but what?

It’s feasible it could be a new take on an existing property: further ‘Godzilla’ movies are anticipated from Warner Bros/Legendary, although the 2014 film’s director Gareth Edwards is attached to the announced 2018 sequel.

However, Wan has demonstrated an uneasiness with remakes in the past, notably declining an offer to direct a third version of ‘The Blob’ (now set to be directed by ‘The Expendables 2′s Simon West).

And, of course, original giant monster movies are not unheard of, notably 2008′s ‘Cloverfield,’ 2013′s ‘Pacific Rim’ which also has a sequel on the cards, and the recently announced Anne Hathaway vehicle ‘Colossal’ (although the latter film has been hit by legal difficulties, with the ‘Godzilla’ rights-holders accusing the project of plagiarism).

We look forward to hearing more on this matter. In the meantime, Wan will shortly start work on ‘The Conjuring 2: the Enfield Poltergeist,’ due in UK cinemas on 17 June 2016.
