There are many different body types in this world, and the conversation about their lack of representation in mainstream film and television has been ongoing for years. The latest person to weigh in is James Corden, who has been open about his struggles with weight since childhood.

He talked to Rolling Stone about how he doesn’t understand why unattractive people or those with heavier figures never fall in love in romantic comedies.

“I could never understand when I watch romantic comedies the notion that for some reason heavy people don’t fall in love. If they do, it’s in some odd, kooky, roundabout way — and it’s not. It’s exactly the same. I met my wife; she barely owned a television and worked for Save the Children. We sat down one night and we fell in love and that was it.”

Of course, he makes an excellent point. Why do Hollywood stories shy away from people who look different? There is no acceptable reason that springs to mind!

And Corden’s background is also a very relatable one. He tells Rolling Stone that he began to use his comedy and confidence as a shield against school kids who picked on him for being a bit bigger.

This makes us think… if there were more diverse stories depicted in pop culture, being different than some other kids wouldn’t be such a weird thing. It would be considered normal, which it should be, because it is actually normal.

We’re glad that Corden has contributed to this discussion and shared his personal story, because it helps raise awareness about representation – or the lack thereof – in Hollywood.

He’s one of our fave dudes.
