Jalen Hurts Will Wear Air Jordan 1 Retro High ’85 ‘Bred’ Cleats at Super Bowl 2025
The Air Jordan 1 Retro High ’85 “Bred” is arguably the most coveted sneaker release of 2025 thus far. So it should come as no surprise when fans see Jalen Hurts, a Jordan Brand athlete — and one of the stars of its ongoing “Banned” marketing efforts — wearing a pair on the field during Super Bowl 59.
The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback will have an “Unbannable” player edition (PE) cleated version of the Air Jordan 1 Retro High ’85 “Bred” laced up against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Specifically, the black-and-red pair Hurts will wear has a black rectangle over the lateral Swoosh branding, reminiscent of Nike’s “Banned” marketing that dates back to 1985. Also, the word “Unbannable” is on the heels of both shoes, along with a small, white Jumpman logo. Hurts’ logo appears on the right tongue and the Jumpman logo is on the left.

“The standard of greatness set by Michael Jordan transcends the basketball court, inspiring a new generation of athletes who refuse to accept limits,” Jordan Brand wrote in a statement emailed to FN. “Hurts embodies this spirit as he takes the field, proving that whether on your feet, cleats or jersey, the Jumpman represents one clear message: Greatness is the expectation.”
The statement continued, “These PE cleats represent the brand’s enduring impact on sport and culture.”
Hurts has been one of the focal points of Jordan Brand’s revisited “banned” marketing efforts, which began in December 2024 and coincide with this year’s 40th anniversary of the Air Jordan 1.
Most notably, the quarterback arrived in New Orleans one week before the Super Bowl on Feb. 2 in a hoodie with an image of his mismatched Air Jordan 11 cleats, which earned him a $5,628 fine from the NFL in December 2024 for violating its uniform and equipment rules. The cleats were covered with black rectangles, a nod to Nike’s “Banned” marketing campaign promoting the Air Jordan 1 in 1985. As the story goes, the NBA sent a letter to Nike in 1985 that stated MJ’s shoes worn “on or around October 18, 1984” violated its dress code rules, and the brand claims it paid a $5,000 fine every time he wore his black-and-red footwear.
Hurts also was featured in Jordan Brand’s star-studded “Unbannable” ad that debuted on Feb. 2, which playfully answered the question “What if we didn’t pay the fine?” The ad also featured Luka Dončić, DJ Khaled, Travis Scott, Nigel Sylvester and countless others.
Hurts and the Eagles will face the Chiefs in Super Bowl 59 on Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will air live on Fox.
