Robert Downey Jr has admitted that, despite his heroic death right at the end of Avengers: Endgame, there’s a chance that Iron Man could return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After being asked by Extra whether the beloved superhero could ever make make a comeback, Downey replied, “Yeah, anything could happen. I’m really enjoying,” at this point, Downey’s wife Susan, who is a producer on their upcoming film Dolittle, interrupted to presciently predict that this would be the headline of the interview.

This didn’t stop Downey Jr from adding to his original answer, though, as he continued, “As far as I'm concerned, I hung up my guns and I'm good to let it go. I also think Marvel is on this journey now and they're trying a bunch of other stuff, and I'm excited for them to see how all that goes. It's hard to project."

While the Oscar-nominated actor’s remarks are very vague and noncommittal, Marvel fans will be ecstatic to learn that Downey didn’t immediately shoot down the mere mention of his potential return to the MCU.

However, it seems unlikely that Kevin Feige and his cohorts will look to bring Iron Man back into the fold anytime soon.

Not just because it would immediately weaken his heart-breaking demise in Endgame, but they also have the small matter of incorporating The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Blade, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next few years, too.

If you’re pining to see Downey Jr in action, though, you can do just that when Dolittle, which sees him portray the titular character that can talk to animals, is finally released on 7 February.
