Ikea's newly-announced gaming collection, Brännboll, challenges traditional gaming design with a range of furniture, storage solutions and accessories to suit contemporary homes.

Gaming furniture isn't new territory for Ikea. The Swedish company released its first-ever range of high-performing gaming products with Republic of Gamers in 2021 to target the 2.5 billion gamers around the world, at the time noting that a 'diverse group united by their love of e-sports and gaming' were in fact 'an overlooked group from a life-at-home perspective'.

For 2024, enter the Brännboll collection, inspired by the evolving and diverse needs of gamers and those who live with them. Announced during Milan Design Week and hot on the heels of the fifth edition of the Nytillverkad collection (there's a new-look Poäng chair and Klippan sofa in town), Brännboll moves away from the typically boring black, white and grey gaming furniture, and introduces vibrant colours and elements inspired by street sports and athleisure.

So what's included? Highlights of the 20-strong collection include an inflatable gaming lounge chair, a multifunctional basket that doubles as a movable self-standing table, a mounted display cabinet, a gaming station with a foldable tabletop, an ergonomic chair that swings from side to side in harmony with the gamer's movement, and a side table on castors.

But these items are not just for gaming, say Ikea. Many of these multifunctional pieces are designed to be moved around and adapted to different spaces, so gamers can swiftly set up an immersive gaming environment from room to room, and transition to their everyday living space with minimal effort.

'With Brännboll we are embracing the idea that gaming is for everyone and belongs everywhere in the home. It's about making it simple for people to create spaces that adapt to gaming, living, and everything in between,' says Philip Dilé, product design developer at Ikea of Sweden. 'We hope this collection will encourage friends and families to engage together, bringing joy and connection through shared gaming experiences.'

Brännboll launches in September 2024.
