Huawei heiress attempts to shed rich girl image by participating in a variety show

Annabel Yao, daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, surprised netizens by participating in the Chinese variety show, Chinese Restaurant 5. Widely known as 'Huawei Princess', Yao made her foray into the entertainment world in January 2021 after having signed to an entertainment company as a birthday gift to herself.

Chinese Restaurant 5 follows a group of celebrities as they attempt to run a Chinese restaurant, with the previous seasons including famous Chinese stars such as Vicky Zhao, Alec Su, and Huang Xiaoming. The stars will be filmed cooking, cleaning, and entertaining the diners without extra assistance from the staff.

In photos leaked from the filming site, Yao was seen helping the crew with additional bags and filming equipment. Sporting a new short hairdo, news reports said that she had taken her own luggage without others’ helping her, earning her some praise from the netizens but scrutiny from others, claiming that Yao “bought commenters to flood praise on the forums for her”.

The heiress, whose father is reportedly worth S$3.5 billion, had earlier infuriated Chinese netizens through her 17-minute debut video documentary when she suggested that she had lived a life of challenges and struggles.

Amongst the comments was also one that stood out, claiming that Yao had hired her own scriptwriter to join the show’s production team to help her better her public image. The netizen alleged that Yao needed to “make sure the public view her favourably”, and with her own scriptwriter, she will be able to influence the filming and production process.
