Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant in Block 352 Clementi has been voted as one of Clementi’s top seafood zi char restaurants, but I’ve never tried it before. It’s been around since 1981, serving the community with delicious zi char.
I decided to bring my parents down for a family dinner, and we sat at one of the tables in front of the stall which were reserved for patrons of the restaurant. They had many dishes on their menu which all looked appetising, but I had to get their famous Hor Fun With Egg that they were acclaimed for.
What I tried at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant
With only three of us, there was a limit on how much I was able to order and eat. After scouring through the menu, I finally settled on four dishes.
Hor Fun w/ Egg (S$7 for small), also known as wat tan hor, is the star dish at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant. Despite ordering the smallest size, the portion was extremely generous and was enough for the three of us. It was filled to the brim with many ingredients, such as hor fun noodles, prawns, egg, chicken, sotong and fish.
There was a distinct wok hei taste which helped to elevate the flavours of the dish, and the noodles were seasoned perfectly.
Alongside all these, there was a generous heap of pork lard on the hor fun which were fried to a crisp and were oily and crispy. It was luxurious and I enjoyed it very much. One could eat a bite of the hor fun with a piece of pork lard, which added a savoury flavour to the hor fun.
One gripe I had with the Hor Fun w/ Egg was that while there was a generous variety of ingredients, I felt that the ingredients did not really match each other— it was tough to match the flavour of the chicken with the fish and the shrimp. Nevertheless, for S$7, this dish at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant was really filling and scrumptious.
Pig’s Stomach Soup (S$14) was warm and hearty. They were generous with their ingredients, and the bowl had many ingredients such as fish maw, chicken feet, pig stomach and button mushrooms. The herbal soup was peppery, and I felt a satisfying burn when it went down my throat.
The pig stomach was tender and really delectable. As I am not a fan of chicken feet, my dad took the liberty to eat it and he enjoyed the chicken feet. Out of all the Pig’s Stomach Soup I’ve consumed, this has got to be one of the top five soups I’ve had.
French Beans w/ Dried Shrimps (S$17 for small) were fragrant. The french beans were fresh, which could be seen through its vibrant green colour and the crispness of it. It was fried well and had a glossy sheen. Despite being fried in oil, there was no strong stale oil taste at all, and was delicious. This is a must order at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant.
There was a generous serving of fried shrimps that topped the vegetables, which were crispy and gave the dish an added crunch. There was chilli padi fried together with the dried shrimps, which gave a slight spice to the vegetables. However be warned, if you bite into the chilli padi, it will be spicy!
Deep Fried Big Intestine (S$18 for small) were fried to perfection. It was pork intestines, and there was definitely the distinct meaty taste but it was not too strong and off-putting. The big intestines were cleaned well such that there was no funky taste, and only the taste of the meaty intestines remained.
This was my favourite dish at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant. It had a crispy outer shell that was fried to a deep brown, and the inside was still fatty and oily. The dish came with slices of pineapples and cucumbers which were able to cut through the greasiness of the intestines. It was accompanied by a sauce that was savoury and tasted like chee cheong fun sauce.
My small nuclear family really enjoyed this dinner at Hoy Yong Seafood Restaurant as all the dishes were flavourful in their own rights, and were all delicious in their own merits. Honestly, I do travel to Clementi pretty often but this was my first time eating here. It’s definitely not my last time though! I’ll be coming back for the vegetables, the Deep Fried Pig Intestines, and to try their other dishes.
