How to spend an unexpected night sleeping at (or near) the airport

The likelihood of delays can increase during peak travel times, holidays, and in regions prone to specific weather challenges.

Going on a holiday is all rainbows and unicorns until the dreaded flight delay hits us with a sounding slap. Although airlines and airports continually work on improving their operational efficiency, delays can happen due to a multitude of factors and the likelihood can increase during peak travel times, holidays, and in regions prone to specific weather challenges.

Apart from following these tips for travelling during the holiday season, do you know what to do when you have to spend an unexpected night at the airport? With some preparation and resourcefulness, here are some ways to make the experience more bearable.

1. Check with the airport and airline staff

Ask airport staff about available services, such as blankets, pillows, or sleeping areas. Some airports provide these amenities for stranded passengers. Your airline may also provide some refreshments as an apology for the delay. They may also be able to provide alternative flights or accommodations, so you need not spend the night at the airport.

2. Book nearby accommodation

Before settling in at the airport, check if there are any nearby hotels or motels where you can book a room for the night. Many airports have hotels within or close to the terminal. However, you’re not the only one facing the flight delay, so expect the rooms to be sold out quickly. You can always try your luck through sites like Booking.com, Trip.com, and Agoda though.

3. Access the airport lounge

If you have access to airport lounges through your airline status or credit card benefits, consider using them. Lounges often provide more comfortable seating, refreshments, and sometimes even sleeping facilities. Even if you don’t have free access, you can still pay a fee to enter. But likewise, the airport lounge may be crowded when everyone on your flight is experiencing the same delay.

4. Find a comfortable spot

Look for a quiet and less crowded area in the airport. Some airports have designated rest zones or comfortable seating areas. You can also pack a neck pillow, eye mask and noise-cancelling earbuds to help you get some quality shuteye.

5. Charge your devices

You’ll want to stay connected and updated about the latest flight information. As airlines may communicate through emails or text messages, make sure your electronic devices are fully charged before the airport closes for the night. (Yes, not every airport operates 24/7 like our beloved Changi Airport.) Some airports have charging stations or outlets, so locate these and use them wisely. You can also bring along a power bank or portable charger and a multi-functional charging cable in case there is no charging station available to fuel up all your different devices.

6. Safety first

Especially if you’re in a foreign land or countries that have high crime rates, choose a well-lit and populated area to ensure your safety. Stay vigilant and keep your belongings secure, especially if you decide to take a nap. If you’re travelling with others, you can also take turns to keep watch.

7. Bring comfort items

Have a small travel pillow, blanket, or shawl to make yourself more comfortable. Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs can help drown out airport sounds. You can also pack a travel towel and toiletries to wash up. Feeling refreshed before taking a long flight can keep your spirits up, instead of feeling burdened by the delay.

8. Prepare some entertainment

Although some airports offer free Wi-Fi, they may not have enough bandwidth for you to stream videos. It’s better to bring a book or e-reader, or download movies and TV shows on your device to keep yourself entertained during the night. Gamers can, of course, bring along their Nintendo Switch or other portable game consoles.

9. Pack snacks and water

Keep some non-perishable snacks and a reusable water bottle with you. This way, you can stay hydrated and have something to munch on if you get hungry during the night. It is also during such time that you’ll learn to appreciate how wonderful Changi Airport is—no lack of eateries or shops that sell snacks even late into the night.
