How to encourage your child to read
Growing up, do you remember yourself as a bookworm immersed in the world of wonderful stories, or do you find it difficult to plough through the sea of words?
Developing a love for reading doesn’t come naturally, and ideally, it is a habit to be encouraged and formed at a young age. In part, it is a journey that starts with the parents.
One of the ways you can encourage your child to read is to let them choose a book they like. But at the same time, help them pick a book that isn’t too hard or too easy for them. Once you identified the genre/type your child prefers, source out a series of books under that genre/type, which will make it easier for them to grasp.
Most importantly, read with them and make it a fun experience. This not only serves as a time to establish a bond with your child, but it also helps them enjoy reading. The happy memories will reinforce a love for reading as they associate books with pleasure instead of disdain.
If you didn’t know already, Shopee has a books section with a voucher that gives you 6 per cent off a minimum spend of S$15. Below are some recommended children's books sorted by age. And if you want some books for yourself, Shopee Books also features everyday reads and all-time best sellers.
