'House Of The Dragon' Has Been Renewed For Season 3

Days before House of the Dragon's second season has even premiered, a third series of Game of Thrones prequel has already been commissioned by HBO.

'George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon,' she said in a statement. 'We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.'

While the second season of the hit Game of Thrones prequel has yet to actually air, it's already amassed a 88% Rotten Tomatoes rating, with critics hailing it as 'bloody' and 'brilliant.' If you, like us, can't help but get ahead of yourself, this is everything we know so far about the now-confirmed third series.

What will the plot of House of the Dragon season three be?

While the plot of the third season isn't yet clear, House of the Dragon is based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which is set 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen’s devastating civil war.

HBO is also currently working on yet another Game of Thrones prequel series, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on Martin's characters Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, from his Tales of Dunk and Egg books.

That's not all. A new pilot for a Game of Thrones sequel, named Ten Thousand Ships, was also teased by Martin in June 2024. The author said that it was being written by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Eboni Booth, although, according to Deadline, HBO declined to comment on whether the project was in active development.

Who will star in House of the Dragon season three?

Most of the cast of the first season of House of the Dragon have returned to star in the sophomoric series, so it's natural to assume that they'll be back for the show's third outing too.

Among them are Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower), Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) and Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen).

When will House of the Dragon season three be released?

Season one of House of the Dragon was released in August 2022, with the second season set to premiere in June 2024 so it's safe to assume that we've got a bit of a wait ahead of us before the third series will air.

Martin did, however, tease in December 2023 that he was already working with the writing team on the third and fourth series of the fantasy drama, meaning that, year-long waits aside, there's plenty to look forward to from the dragon-filled cannon.
