‘House of the Dragon’ Finale Trailer Teases an Epic Showdown and Tons of Dragons (Video)

The “House of the Dragon” season finale airs Sunday, and the trailer for Episode 10 promises the most epic showdown for the series yet.

The penultimate episode of the season saw Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) maneuvering in the wake of King Viserys’ death to position her son, Aegon, as the rightful heir to the throne after misunderstanding Viserys’ dying words. Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) was wholly absent from the episode, but we see in the Episode 10 trailer that she’ll very quickly learn that her claim is being usurped.

“The Greens are coming for you Rhaenyra. And for your children,” Rhaenys (Eve Best) is seen telling Rhaenyra (so many R names!). We see as Rhaenyra and Daemon (Matt Smith) prepare their next move at Dragonstone, and Rhaenyra’s first-born sons volunteer to make the trek to King’s Landing to strike.

It very much sounds like an assault on The Red Keep is in play, which would be the smart move. The Red Keep is of course the castle that houses Alicent and Aegon and their whole family, but also their dragons, and if Rhaenyra could take away Alicent’s kids’ dragons, she’d have an upper hand. And by the looks of things, this season finale will have a lot of dragons.

“House of the Dragon” has already been renewed for a second season so there’s no reason to worry about being left hanging for long after the finale. Ryan Condal, co-creator of the series, is taking on showrunning duties solo for Season 2 with “Game of Thrones” filmmaker Alan Taylor joining the production as director and executive producer following Miguel Sapochnik’s exit.

Condal previously told TheWrap that “House of the Dragon” is a shorter story, all-told, than “Game of Thrones” and likely won’t run as long as the flagship series did.

“This particular story, the one that I’m telling right now, the Dance of the Dragons as the original series, it doesn’t have that breadth to it,” Condal said. “Not to say it’s any less interesting. It’s a really great series. But I think also part of making a series is knowing when to drop the curtain on it and call an end.”

That said, Condal teased that there’s a rich Targaryen history to be mined before and after the events of “House of the Dragon” that could be continued in another HBO series.

“But I’ve always said the show is called ‘House of the Dragon.’ It’s not called ‘The Dance of the Dragons.’ And I think there is a very rich 300-year Targaryen dynasty to mine many stories out of, and that is the thing that I think is the most promising for the future for fans of Westeros is that George [R.R. Martin] has written some deeply complex history. That’s three centuries long that begins with Aegon’s Conquest – actually it begins before Aegon’s Conquest with the story of the Targaryens leaving old Valeria because of the dream of one little girl. There are so many stories to be mined out of there. I think as long as there’s a willing audience, there is plenty of Targaryen to come.”

The ”House of the Dragon” Season 1 finale airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max on Oct. 23.
