Highly-anticipated Market Street Hawker Centre finally reopens at CapitaSpring with 56 food stalls over 2 storeys

Market Street Hawker Centre has gone through several relocations and name changes— from the original Golden Shoe Hawker Centre in May 1984 to Market Street Interim Hawker Centre in 2017— but after four years, it’s finally back home.

The iconic hawker centre, which officially reopened on 5 April 2022, is located on the second and third storey of the newly opened CapitaSpring building, and is a mere two miunte walk from Raffles Place MRT.

Located at 88 Market Street, CapitaSpring is a towering 51-storey integrated development comprising offices, retail spaces, serviced residences, a four-storey public garden with social and activity spaces, a sky garden, and a two-storey hawker centre.

As you can tell from the amount of green spaces within the skyscraper, CapitaSpring’s all about sustainability and healthy living. You’ll find cycling paths and plenty of bicycle lots that are meant to encourage you to go car-lite, as well as public gardens, rooftop gardens and observation decks that are great for afternoon or evening strolls.

If you ask me, it sounds like a chill place to paktor, especially after dining at the two-storey hawker centre. Hint hint.

Foodies will be pleased to know that its two-storey hawker centre will house a total of 56 stalls, majority of which were originally at Market Street Interim Hawker Centre.

Such stalls include Wei Nan Wang Hok Kian Lor Mee (#02-05), a popular lor mee stall that’s run by an elderly couple. Even though they shifted to Market Street Interim Hawker Centre in 2018, they’ve actually been making lor mee since 1975 when they were originally at now-defunct Boat Quay Food Centre.

Be sure to try their Lor Mee (S$3.50/S$4.50), which is well-known for having less oil and salt, resulting in a lighter gravy. Do note that this stall is located on the second floor of CapitaSpring!

You can find Bee Kee Wanton Noodle (#03-07) on the third floor of CapitaSpring.

This stall, which has an existing outlet at Lorong Lew Lian in Serangoon, is most known for its Truffle Wanton Noodle (S$7/S$9), which uses white truffle oil for that extra aromatic touch. If you’re a wanton mee purist, you might prefer its Wanton Noodle (S$4/S$5) instead.

If you’re looking for breakfast options, be sure to swing by Sunrise Traditional Toast and Coffee (#02-15) for your Kaya Toast Set (S$3.50) fix.

With 56 stalls spread over two storeys (and considering most stalls sell more than one dish), you can literally dine here for two months straight and still have plenty of options left. I guess it’s time to pay this iconic hawker centre a visit!
