Hebe Tien and Soft Lipa win Best Singers at Golden Melody Awards

The Golden Melody Awards, the biggest music awards for Chinese music in Asia, held its 32nd edition on Saturday (21 August) at the Taipei Music Center.

The socially distanced event, which was streamed online, had been postponed from June to August because of a COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan in May.

Taiwanese singers Hebe Tien and Soft Lipa won the Best Female Singer and Best Male Singer awards in the Mandarin category – Tien for her album Time Will Tell, and Soft Lipa for his album Home Cookin'.

Hebe and Soft Lipa's albums also each won two other major awards.

Hebe's album Time Will Tell won Best Album Producer for George Chen as well as Best Lyricist for David Ke for the song Untold, which was performed by Hebe.

This is Hebe's first time winning the Best Singer award. She rose to fame as part of the girl group S.H.E., and was visibly moved during her acceptance speech as she thanked the two other members of S.H.E., Selina Jen and Ella Chen, and her family.

As for rapper Soft Lipa, besides his Best Singer prize, his album Home Cookin' also won Best Mandarin Album, as well as Best Music Video for the album's title track Home Cookin', directed by Cowper Wang.

Singaporean Mandopop superstar JJ Lin had also been nominated for Best Male Singer for his album Drifter/Like You Do, but ended up losing the award to Soft Lipa. JJ did not attend the awards show but posted a video online of his reaction to Soft Lipa's win, joking that he should start rapping. He wrote, "Congratulations Soft Lipa! Didn’t manage to get the win this time, but I am happy and content!"

The Album of the Year title went to Gain Strength, by Taiwanese indigenous musician Sangpuy Katatepan Mavaliyw.

Sangpuy was also named Best Indigenous Singer for his album Pulu'em (Gain Strength).

Song of the Year went to Your Name Engraved Herein, from the soundtrack of the movie of the same title, performed by Crowd Lu.

Sunset Rollercoaster won Best Band, and The Wanted was Best Vocal Group.
