Haters Are Ripping Apart Mary Tyler Moore's Old Connecticut Mansion

Mary Tyler Moore might've turned the world on with her smile, but the internet can't say the same about her real-estate portfolio. Last week, the television icon's former home was placed on the market for $21.9 million, which is double the $10 million price tag The Dick Van Dyke Show star bought it for back in 2006. (According to The Wall Street Journal, Moore's husband said he made the "massively difficult" decision to finally sell the property six years after the actress's passing in 2017.)

Nestled on seven acres in Connecticut's oh-so-posh town of Greenwich, the 13,825-square-foot space boasts a private gym, an outdoor pool, and a billiards room. But, while the Georgian-style home might seem like a textbook celebrity abode, the internet has a lot to say about its decor. "It's definitely a tear-down," one commenter wrote on Facebook. "It's extremely outdated, but on a gorgeous piece of property." "Very disappointed by the decor," another remarked. Meanwhile, one person balked at some of the most over-the-top amenities. "I've been looking for a dog shower," a commenter joked. "This may work." (For what it's worth, Moore was an avid animal rights activist, co-founded a charity called Broadway Barks, and even owned four dogs, so it's no surprise her home was set up to pamper pooches.)

Frankly, we were a little surprised by the sniping. When it comes to interior design, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder—and this home is no exception. Sure, the old-school decor isn't everyone's speed, but if you look past the furniture, you might see gorgeous wood-paneling, a statement-making staircase, and a solarium that even the internet's biggest critics said was stunning. Want to be judge of this star-studded space for yourself? Read on for an intimate look at Mary Tyler Moore's former home. You're gonna make it after all!

The Exterior

Though the mansion was built in 1900, it has since undergone an expansion and renovation by architect Stephen Wang. The spacious home sits on 7.37 acres of land—and is surrounded by an additional five acres of conversation land—offering an idyllic, private retreat.

The Billiards Room

We know Moore's on-screen persona, Mary Richards, didn't live here, but we could totally see her and Rhoda embracing their competitive sides in this wood-paneled billiards room.

The Bedroom

With five bedrooms and five full bathrooms, there was plenty of room for Moore's family and famous friends to spend the night. This suite takes a more-is-more approach with a floral rug, chintzy drapes, and frilly upholstery. (Dare we say Moore embraced the grandmillenial trend before it was cool?)

The Conservatory

Our favorite part of this home? The conservatory. You don't have to be a plant parent to appreciate this home's double-height windows, dome ceiling, and gilded chandelier.
