Happy Valley star James Norton has revealed a behind-the-scenes look into the memorable car scene from the show.

In an Instagram post which was captioned “BTS from Series 3”, the actor showed us what really went down while filming that scene, using the song 'Trouble Town' by Jake Bugg to score the video.

The clip shows various pictures and videos of him and his fellow actors covered in fake blood, as we get to see that the car scene – which looked like it was filmed in the countryside – was not filmed there at all.

Instead, it was all on green screen.

In one funny instance, we can even see Norton pretending to run as the green screen keeps rolling footage of the countryside roads.

Some parts of the scene were, however, also filmed in the actual countryside.

As fans may recall, in the show, Tommy Lee Royce (played by Norton) caused a car crash to escape from Darius Knezevic. But having sustained some pretty nasty injuries, he decided that he’d rather die than land himself back in prison.

After a final confrontation with Catherine (Sarah Lancashire), Tommy killed himself by setting himself on fire.

Creator and writer Sally Wainwright recently spoke about Lancashire's input into the ending.

"Sarah is to thank for that ending in many ways, because I wrote the first draft, and everybody seemed quite happy with it and then she made it clear that she wasn’t happy with it," she recalled.

"The Christmas before, she came up to my house, and she spent all day talking about it and she gave me some really good notes. So everything got pushed a bit further in that episode and it was all thanks to Sarah."

Happy Valley airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
