Hairstyles Seen on ‘Descendants of the Sun’: Expectations vs Reality
안녕하세요 Annyeonghaseyo!
Are you still pining for the most popular K-drama series of 2016, “Descendants of the Sun”?
For those who are, you may be thinking of getting a hairstyle inspired by the stars in the drama like Song Hye Kyo, Kim Ji Won or Song Joong Ki. But will their hairstyles look as good on you?
To give you a better feel, we compare pictures of the stars and regular people with hairstyles similar to those of the “Descendants of the Sun” characters, and give you tips on how you can achieve the look.
Song Hye Kyo (Doctor Kang Mo-yeon)
Expectation
Reality
We have to admit that this look by Style NA Korean Salon comes pretty close to Song Hye Kyo’s hairstyle in Descendants of the Sun, even the hair colour and technique used to dye the hair are almost identical.
Our face may not all be as small as Song Hye Kyo but with the right face shape it can work on normal folks as well.
How to achieve Song Hye Kyo’s hairstyle?
To achieve her hairstyle, you would have to request the following hair services from your hairstylist:
See-through Bangs
One Length Haircut
Ash Brown Hair Colour
C-Curl Volume Rebonding
You may not need to do them all as it all really depends on on your face shape and your hair condition.
Here’s how it may look if you change various aspects of it:
1. Skip the Colour
C Curl Volume Rebonding by Korean Stylist Justin from Zinc Korean Hair Salon.
Skip the colour and get a C-curl perm if you are worried about causing too much damage to your hair or wish to cut cost.
2. Add some Layers to the C Curl Perm (rather than having a one-length haircut)

Adding some soft layers will make the hair appear less heavy at the ends and give a more flowy effect.
Ask your stylist if one length or soft layers suit you best!
3. Go for a longer hair length
C Curl Perm by Korean Stylist Lee Han from Pro Trim Korean Salon @ JEM
C-curl rebonding is hard to maintain at shoulder length because it will “qiao” or curl left and right as your hair keeps “hitting” the shoulders. As a result, many ladies find that their C-curl could disappear within weeks.
A good hairstylist would recommend you to get a C-curl perm after your hair has grown beyond the shoulders as it is more manageable.
4. Skip the See Through Bangs
C Curl Volume Rebonding by Oscar from Chez Vous Hair Salon
Bangs are not suitable for everyone. Hence, what looks good on a celebrity might not look as good on you as your face shape is different.
See through bangs especially are not suitable for ladies with a round face as it makes their face look even rounder. If you insist on getting bangs like Song Hye Kyo but have a round face, your next best option is to cut straight bangs, like the one below.

5. Skip the C Curl Rebonding
Highlights by Korean Stylist Gio from Apgujeong Hair Studio @ Punggol Waterway Point
A lot of salons may not tell you this but if you have bleached hair or if your hair is too damaged, you may not be able to go for C Curl Rebonding.
This is because the C Curl is achieved via a perm. If your hair is already very damaged, the C Curl will not hold and you are likely to find that the curl loosens the next day. Worse, your hair may be “fried” after the perm if your stylist is not skilled!
For those of you whose hair is already straight, consider going for a hair colour and trim to refresh your overall look. You don’t really need the rebonding as the hair is straight. Instead of damaging your hair further with a perm at the ends, you can recreate the look yourself by using a tong to curl your hair inwards for a temporary C Curl!
Kim Ji Won (Yoon Myung Joo)

Volume Rebonding and Colour by Korean Stylist Lee Han from Pro Trim Korean Salon @ JEM
Have we found our very own Kim Ji Won here in Singapore?
This chin-length cut by Pro Trim Korean Salon brings out this lady’s beautiful eyes and smile while the colour enhances her congeniality.
We also love how the volume rebonding makes her hair look sleeker without looking too flat.
C Curve Rebonding can also work just well as it adds a C at the ends to help the hair curl inwards.

How to achieve Kim Ji Won’s Hairstyle
To achieve her hairstyle, you would have to request the following hair services from your hairstylist:
One Length Haircut that ends near your chin
Volume Rebonding or C Curve Rebonding
Ash Brown Hair Colour
Here’s how it may look if you change various aspects of it:
1. Go a little Longer
Volume Rebonding by Artica Hair Studio
If you are not keen on going too short, a similar haircut with volume rebonding will work well on shoulder length hair.
2. Go for Alternative Perm styles
If your face is not as small as Kim Ji Won or the lady shown above, you can consider alternative curl styles that may increase your hair volume.

Despite having relatively thin hair, Agent S managed to make her hair more voluminous with S curls from a Omega Ceramic Perm by Apgujeong Hair Studio.

J curves can also give you a slightly different look as the curls turn out slightly.
Song Joong Ki (Yoo Shi Jin)

J Curl Perm for Men + Down Perm by Picasso Hair Studio
Men! Steal the hearts of ladies with a haircut like Song Joong Ki’s.
It’s quite effortless to maintain, as the perm increases your hair volume at the crown without making it curly.
How to Achieve His Hairstyle
J Curl Perm
Down Perm (especially if you have thick hair that sticks out at the side!)
Regent Haircut
The J Curl Perm will increase volume at your crown while the Down Perm will flatten the hair at your sides - great if you have thick hair that sticks out at the side but are not keen to go for undercuts or fades.
Whether you need a perm at all really depends on your existing hair texture and condition, so consult your hairstylist for suggestions.
1. Different Perm Styles
Picasso Hair Studio showed us the difference in perm styles for men. Other than the J Curve Perm above, we’re in love with the C Curl Perm and Korean Wave Perm for men.

Korean Wave Perm + Down Perm by Picasso Hair Studio
You may not look the same as Song Joong Ki but the increased hair volume can definitely give you a more glittery Korean-star look.
2. Skip the Perm

If your hair texture can be easily sculpted to look like Song Joong Ki’s hairstyle, you don’t have to go for a perm.

A good haircut should be able to do the trick.
