Gwendoline Christie is set to return to the "Star Wars" franchise, confirming her appearance in "Episode VIII".

The star broke the news to People on the red carpet at the preshow ahead of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night.

The news comes as "Star Wars: the Force Awakens", in which Christie plays the role of Captain Phasma, continues to enjoy huge box office success.

"I was very overexcited," Christie told People. "I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time. And then I was delighted when J.J. Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man."

"Star Wars: Episode VIII" is set to debut on December 15, 2017.
