Great Outfits in Fashion History: Iman's 1990 Alaïa Mini Dress

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

On Nov. 29, 1990, Iman made headlines for a good cause: She stepped out with then-boyfriend David Bowie — one of their first public appearances together — for the first iteration of Seventh on Sale, a fundraiser organized by the fashion community to benefit those living with HIV/AIDS. She wore a belted satin jacket and tights with a gold-chained bag into the event, as it took place on a crisp winter evening. Once inside the Park Avenue Armory, though, she removed the topper, revealing a sheer lace dress from the Alaïa Fall 1990 collection.

In '90s minimalist fashion, Iman accessorized with a gold watch-band bracelet and red earrings, and opted to skip a necklace, allowing the neckline of the dress (and her collarbones) to speak for themselves.

Iman has continued her philanthropic support of the fight against AIDS and several other causes throughout her life. She's a noted supporter of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Keep a Child Alive and the Champions for Children campaigns. She was named as a Global CARE Advocate in 2019.
