Great New Pictures From Star Wars VIII Set Recall Original Movies

Rian Johnson, officially one of the luckiest directors on the planet right now, has dropped two very classy new shots from the set of ‘Star Wars VIII’.

Marking the half-way stage of shooting, the grainy, black and white stills evoke the original trilogy, one with Johnson polishing the windscreen of what looks like an X-Wing fighter.

There’s also a shot of a First Order drone working at a control panel, which with its sparse design recalls the Death Star from 'A New Hope’ and 'Return of the Jedi’, notably that smart, shiny headwear.

Perhaps Kylo Ren is finding new ways to motivate them…

Captioning the shots, Johnson added: “Good. Bad. I’m the guy with the microfiber sham. I can’t believe we’re halfway through the shoot. (We’re halfway through the shoot!)”

Johnson has been providing sporadic photo updates from his Tumblr account, a shot of Lupito Nyong'o doing her mo-cap thing as Maz Kanata emerging earlier this month.

There was another shot of Johnson’s cinematographer Steve Yedlin perched on some rigging around some real sci-fi type space tube business, back in March.

Johnson, much like J.J. Abrams it appears, is adhering to the notion of physical sets over excessive use of CGI, which will be enormously pleasing for the vast majority of fans.

The movie is set for release on December 15, 2017, will be preceded by prequel 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, about the rebel plot to steal plans to the Death Star, on December 14 this year.
