Golden Globes Beauty Was All About Bobs, Bows and No-makeup Makeup
Diamonds, check. Designer gown, check. Skin prep? That was just as important at Sunday night’s Golden Globes where all matter of tonics, essences, serums and masks laid the foundation for the beauty look of the night — no-makeup makeup.
As seen in WWD Weekend’s cover shoot with Pamela Anderson back in February, which featured the beauty in a new light, the natural look is back in fashion, and on the runways and red carpet, too.

At the Globes, skin was fresh and makeup neutral on Dua Lipa, Margot Robbie, Elle Fanning and a luminous Elizabeth Debicki, who received WWD’s Style Award for Best Beauty, working with makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua.
“I don’t know what that means,” Debicki told WWD when asked about the no-makeup-makeup trend on the red carpet. “I just liked it like this.”
If makeup was minimal, hair was less so, with bows and bobs the night’s top trends.
Golden Globes presenter Kate Beckinsale wore many — and mini — bows as decorative accessories on her bouncy Barbie-like ponytail. Celebrity hairstylist Scott King was behind the look.
“My inspiration for Kate’s look was a more polished and softer look of her signature ponytail,” he said. For a satin-shine finish, he used Unite’s Boosta Finishing Spray for volume and hold.
For Allison Williams and Rachel Brosnahan, bows served as perfect complements to their gowns. Williams, working with hairstylist Bridget Brager, styled hers just below a romantic up-do — wearing the Wide Velvet Bow Barrette by Jennifer Behr, alongside her black sequin Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown.
Brosnahan, with hairstylist Danielle Priano, went cherry red with her bow (and lips), with long ribbons down her sleek ponytail — matching her custom off-the-shoulder Sergio Hudson number. Sarah Snook also had a Behr barrette in her hair — the Mabel Bow — a delicate black silk ribbon with extra-long ends in a half-up ‘do created by Kylee Heath. Meanwhile Zoe Lister-Jones’ pick of bow (also Behr) was impossible to miss: jet black, seen straight-on, contrasting with her ultra-short bleach blonde hair done by Brian Fisher.
Lister-Jones was sporting another beauty trend of the night: the bob. In a half-up style, her cut could be seen from the back, stopping just below her ears. America Ferrera turned heads with her fresh chop, styled by Aviva Perea. The hair was kept close to the neck with a subtle flick out the sides, avoiding a round silhouette, Perea said.
Ayo Edebiri had on a similar look, with a side part and more volume, the work of Miles Jeffries. And Emma Stone had a more dramatic flick by Mara Roszak, who used her brand Rōz.
The bob was also seen on Greta Lee (working with hairstylist Jenny Cho), Naomi Watts (hairstylist Marki Shkreli), Cailee Spaeny (hairstylist Kiley Fitzgerald) and Hannah Waddingham (hairstylist Richard Collins) — who all opted for an old Hollywood take with soft waves. Meanwhile Carey Mulligan went classically French (also working with Cho).
