‘Ghostbusters’ Remake Stars Troll Angry Fanboys With A Capella Cover Of Theme Song
The stars and director of the Ghostbusters remake, appearing on a recent episode of The Graham Norton Show, finally got a little fun payback for months of out of proportion outrage from a particular sector of the geek community. Egged on by director Paul Feig, guests Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones delivered a deliberately terrible cover of the iconic Ghostbusters theme song that is as charming as it is a giant middle finger to online sexists who have for months been positively apoplectic over the specter of a Ghostbusters remake. While there was a strange backlash against the film when it was announced, after the debut of the first trailer earlier this year, angry fanboys swarmed to make their displeasure known with incensed editorials, lamentations about ruined childhoods, and sometimes outright hateful tweets aimed at Feig as well as McCarthy, Wiig, McKinnon and Jones. It’s been one of the more absurdly comic moments in recent pop culture just for observers – if only to see people raging in extremely sexist terms against a film sight unseen.
Which made it all the more fun when Norton piped in Feig via video, who started the gag by saying “I have a story I want to tell, since we are in the business of ruining men’s childhoods.” Feig then asked the women to perform the cover, in exchange for him agreeing to be slimed at the end of it. (Spoiler alert: he was slimed.)
The team behind the remake have largely stayed out of the fray, though Feig has been public about his befuddlement at the behavior from that sector of the geek community. “I’ve been hit with some of the worst misogynistic stuff,” he said in one interview, and has repeatedly had to point out that the all-female remake was his idea and not some kind of focus group product.
Ghostbusters hits theaters July 15.
