Getty Family Saga Trust Nabs Series Order at FX, Danny Boyle to Produce
Slumdog Actual Millionaire?
Danny Boyle‘s latest project, Trust, a limited series about the uber-rich Getty family, has received a series order at FX, the cable network announced Wednesday.
The drama will center on John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune. According to the official release: “Equal parts family history, dynastic saga and satirical examination of the corrosive power of money, Trust is a story that attempts to unlock the mystery at the heart of every family, rich or poor.”

The series will begin in 1973, when the mafia kidnaps young Getty in Rome, thinking that his family will pay handsomely for his return. But as the criminals soon learn, the Getty clan is rather messed up: heroin addiction, multiple mistresses, bankruptcy and — no joke — a pet lion all figure into the family’s chaos.
Boyle, who won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for directing 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, will executive-produce alongside Slumdog‘s Simon Beaufoy and Christian Colson; FX Productions, Cloud Eight Films, Decibel Films and Snicket Films Limited will produce.

“Simon, Danny and Christian have done a magnificent job of telling the story of the Getty family empire and its tumultuous history with Trust,” Eric Schrier, a president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said via statement. “Simon’s script wonderfully dramatizes the notorious and bizarre kidnapping of J. Paul Getty’s grandson. It’s the perfect way to open this limited series, allowing us to see how three generations, including one of the world’s richest men, clash when family, fortune and reputation are in jeopardy.”
