Gene Wilder Will Live On Through The 'Condescending Wonka' Meme
The late Gene Wilder’s amazing performance in ‘Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory’ found a new generation of fans after it was turned into one of the internet’s most popular “memes”.
There are thousands of memes - usually funny photos with user-generated captions that go “viral” - around the web, but ‘Condescending Wonka’ is one of the funniest.
Featuring Wilder’s face from the scene in which he unveils the 'everlasting gobstopper’ in the 1971 movie, it originated as a way to mock newcomers (Wilder’s face underscored with the text 'you must be new here’), but the 'Condescending Wonka’ has long since taken on a life of its own as a way of delivering withering put-downs.
