"The Garden of Evening Mists" among Golden Horse Awards 2019 nominees

2 Oct - The Malaysian-UK co-production "The Garden of Evening Mists" has received nine nominations at this year's Golden Horse Awards.

The film, which is based on Malaysian novelist Tan Twan Eng's 2012 Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel of the same name, has been nominated in categories that include Best Narrative Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Makeup & Costume Design, Best Original Film Score and Best Film Editing, as well as Best Director for Tom Lin.

Lead actress Angelica Lee Sinje also received a nomination for her starring role and will be competing against actresses Samantha Ko ("The Sun"), Yeo Yan-yan ("Wet Season"), Lu Hsueh-feng ("Synapses"), and Gingle Wang ("Detention").

Also starring Japanese actor Hiroshi Abe, Taiwanese actress Sylvia Chang, English actors David Oakes and Julian Sands, and Scottish actor John Hannah, the movie will first make its world premiere at the 24th Busan International Film Festival this 4 October before heading to the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival next month.

It is slated to open in Malaysian cinemas in January 2020.

"Wet Season" is one of the Singaporean movies nominated at this year's Golden Horse Awards.

Meanwhile, Singapore will be represented by two titles, Yeo Siew Hua's "A Land Imagined" and Anthony Chen's "Wet Season".

"A Land Imagined" is nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Film Score, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Effects. It is also Singapore's submission to the 92nd Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category.

"Wet Season" receives six nominations, including Best Narrative Feature, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director for Anthony Chen, and Best Leading Actress for Yeo Yann Yann. The movie has two entries for Best Supporting Actor as both Koh Jia Ler and Yang Shi Bin are nominated in the category.

The movie was also the sole Asian entry in competition at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival's Platform competition, making it the first time a Singaporean title was selected for the section. Most recently, it was selected as the opening film of the 30th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), to be screened on 21 November 2019 at Capitol Theatre.

The 56th Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will be held on Saturday, 23 November 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan.
