Fresh Wave Film Festival receives HKD 10 million donation

13 Jul – Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To recently expressed delight in receiving a huge donation from the Joseph Lau Charitable Foundation to be used for the Fresh Wave Film Festival.

As reported on Mingpao, To, who is also the founder and president of Fresh Wave, shared that the HKD 10 million donation will be used to make a long term and stable development for the festival and new filmmakers.

"Fresh Wave has been short on financing in recent years, so this kind of seed funding really helps us," he said.

The filmmaker also revealed that he hopes to conduct a fundraiser next year to continue earning more money for Fresh Wave.

When asked if he would make a movie to raise money for the festival, To said that he would instead ask superstars like Andy Lau and Louis Koo for help - calling them "the Hong Kong elite".

According to its website, Fresh Wave aims to "promote and encourage local short film production, and to discover and nurture young talents by providing funding support and a platform for showcasing their work, while enhancing their technical skills and quality through training".

Among filmmakers who came out from the Fresh Wave include Frank Hui ("Trivisa"), Jevons Au ("Ten Years"), and Flora Lau ("Bends").
