Fred Cheng feels helpless being called a "Cheap Man"
12 Apr - Hong Kong singer Fred Cheng admitted he felt helpless over being called the Cheapest Man after announcing his relationship with fellow singer Stephanie Ho.
As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who dated Paul Chun's daughter Lesley Chiang previously, referred to an incident following Lesley's recent decision to share a screencap from a Stephen Chow movie online - soon after his relationship with Stephanie made the news.
The screencap, which was taken from the 1991 movie, "Tricky Brain", features Stephen and a cross-dressing Ng Man Tat standing side by side, and the subtitles underneath saying, "A voluptuous pair" (also translated as "A cheating pair"), which was speculated to be an indirect attack towards him. Netizens also started to express similar feelings, and called him a cheap man for dumping both Lesley and Beebs, the girlfriend after.
The post was later removed from her social media account.
"I am aware of it, but I have nothing to say," said Fred, when asked about it at a music event. "It is not within my control. Everybody has freedom of speech."
Fred, who dated Lesley back when he was a nobody, denied that he dumped her after he became popular.
He also stressed that it is nasty to call someone cheap, adding that he will face the negativity with courage.
"I need to adjust my mindset as it has slightly affected my work," he said.
As to rumours that new girlfriend Stephanie suffered from mood disorder in the past, Fred said that he will let her respond to it herself.
