Turning 66 on Nov 3, retired actress Lin Ching Hsia, who had previously starred in blockbuster movies such as Chungking Express and Police Story, releases her latest book to mark the occasion.
Titled Jing Qian Jing Hou, meaning “in front and behind the cameras”, the book is said to be a birthday gift to herself. Lin shared about her experiences along with anecdotes involving close friends.
One particular anecdote involves Lin’s nude photos and costume designer, William Chang, who had styled Lin for her 1992 movie, Swordsman II.
Decades ago, Chang visited Lin in her Hong Kong apartment while the actress was filming in the city. Out of nowhere, Lin took three nude photos of herself and showed it to him. Without another word, Chang left the apartment, shocked.
When Lin asked about his reaction some 30 years later, wondering if he had left her apartment because he was worried that she would seduce him, Chang said that he had forgotten about the incident.
In the book, Lin also talked about her tight friendship with producer Nansun. Together with Nansun’s ex-husband Tsui Hark, they were witnesses at Lin’s wedding to billionaire tycoon Michael Ying in 1994.
Lin shared how Nansun had sat by her bed like a mother on her wedding day and urged her to pick up computer skills for her future children, as well as learning English for her husband.
Lin has two daughters, Eileen, 24, and Melani, 19, with Ying, and a step-daughter Claudia, 33, from Ying’s first marriage. There have been rumours for years that Lin and Ying’s marriage was on the rocks and that the couple has divorced, but there was never any official confirmation from either party.
Lin’s first book was released in 2011, which was an autobiography titled Inside and Outside the Window, giving a glimpse into the superstar’s life. She published a second book in 2014 titled Cloud to Cloud, which was a collection of short stories.
