18 May – Fans might end up waiting forever for the fifth instalment of Blumhouse Productions' "The Purge" franchise to be released in cinemas, as it was revealed over the weekend that it is no longer opening this July.

Previously slated for release in North American cinemas on 10 July 2020, Universal Pictures has decided to pull the movie from its release schedule for now.

There is no new date set yet but according to IndieWire, the studio is still looking at giving the movie a theatrical release.


There is a possibility of the movie being moved online, as Universal did with "Trolls World Tour". Though that digital release did not come without consequences.

Despite raking in a big financial profit from it, US exhibitors were not happy with Universal's decision to bypass the animated film's release in cinemas and have threatened to not screen any of the studio's upcoming titles.

"The Forever Purge" was supposed to be one of the first few Hollywood movies releasing this summer, when cinemas worldwide are expected to fully resume operations. It was originally set to open ahead of Warner Bros.' "Tenet" and Disney's "Mulan".

Most likely, the earliest Hollywood title to be released in North American cinemas this summer will be the Russell Crowe-starring "Unhinged", which was recently announced to have been moved forward from 4 September 2020 to 1 July 2020.
