FIRST LOOK: Sophie Turner smoulders as Dark Phoenix

Filming on X-Men: Dark Phoenix wrapped up recently, but all’s been quiet so far on the mutant front…until now.

Entertainment Weekly has released the cover for its latest issue, and it’s a fiery one. It shows a naked Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) with her hair aflame, with burning embers swirling around her.

This marks the first time that the Dark Phoenix arc has taken centrestage in the Fox X-Men universe. Even back in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, it was shoehorned in as a smaller subplot, and the movie and the story arc both suffered as a result of that. But this time, Simon Kinberg (who wrote the script for The Last Stand), will get the chance to step into the director’s chair and do the storyline justice.

One can only hope we won’t get a convoluted plot like last year’s disastrous X-Men: Apocalypse (see our review), but to be honest I’m not that hopeful on that front. I just hope Turner will do a better job with Jean Grey than she did in Apocalypse.
