First dibs: Warabimochi Kamakura — 3 days only 1-for-1 mochi drinks at famous Japanese chain’s 1st SG outlet!

Calling all sweet tooths and lovers of anything mochi – popular Japanese dessert chain Warabimochi Kamakura is opening its doors to the public on 3 Feb 2024 at One Holland Village!

Specialising in – you guessed it – warabimochi, the well-loved brand has more than 50 stores in Japan. While they have ventured into Hong Kong and Canada, the outlet in Singapore will be the first in Southeast Asia.

In case you’re not familiar, warabimochi is unlike other Japanese mochi we’re acquainted with. It’s made with the starch of the warabi (bracken) plant and has a smooth and delicate gummy texture.

Kamakura’s Warabimochi (S$3.90 for 2 pieces) had a glossy, translucent sheen and was delightfully chewy. Dusted in kinako (soybean flour) and drizzled with Okinawan black sugar syrup, it makes for a refreshing treat that can be enjoyed all year long through Singapore’s summer heat.

You can also choose to have the 2-piece Cup with Ice Cream for S$5.90 or get 10 pieces encased in a gorgeous Paulownia Wooden Box (S$17.90) for that rustic Japanese aesthetic.

I’d always been fine with getting my warabimochi fix from Don Don Donki, but after trying Kamakura’s version, I frankly don’t think I can go back.

These drinks are akin to bubble tea, except loaded with cut-up pieces of flavoured warabimochi as toppings. Each is then topped off with a beautiful swirl of whipped cream.

Our favourite of the lot was hands-down the Strawberry Yogurt. I deeply enjoyed slurping up the strawberry warabimochi, with its candy-like sweetness perfect for a sweet tooth like me.

For the caffeine addicts, opt for the Coffee Milk. Loaded with bits of black sugar warabimochi, it’ll surely bring some fun to your dreary morning coffee fix.

The Asakawa-en Matcha and Tenku No Hojicha paled in comparison, but are nonetheless worth a shot if you’re a tea lover or a Japanese beverage purist.

Don’t fret about missing out just yet, Warabimochi Kamakura is opening a 2nd outlet in Taste Orchard in the second half of Feb, though there is no specific date yet.

In the meantime, drop by Warabimochi Kamakura to beat the heat or for a fun treat!
