First dibs: Thai Supermarket — What goodies you can buy at new Aperia Mall spot, opens 1st week of June
9 April 2023 was a sad day for ardent fans of the famed Thai Supermarket at Golden Mile Complex, established in 1985. Thankfully, not all is lost with its reopening happening on the first week of June at Aperia Mall.
Rachel and I had a sneak peek at what’s behind the boarded-up area of the shopping mall’s atrium, where the new Thai Supermarket is going to be at.
You’ll be greeted by a cute tuk-tuk decked out in my favourite colour (green) at the entrance of the supermarket. Its number plate states ‘5001’ which actually coincides with its old supermarket location at 5001 Beach Road.
The cute Thai taxi will display all the latest products that are being sold. The new Thai Supermarket will have carry 90% Thai Products and the other 10% will be focused on Vietnamese Products. We walked around the aisles and I’ll show you what we found to be interesting.
OK (Oriental Kitchen) Thai instant noodles has come out with 2 new flavours: Truffle and Mala (S$3.80 each) We also saw other varieties like salted egg, hot Korean shrimp and stir-fried tom yum sauce.
By the way, the instant noodle section had stocked more than 10 Thai brands— we were spoiled for choice.
If you love boat noodles, you may consider cooking them at home with Lerros Thai Boat Noodle (S$2.80 each). You may choose between Dried Rice Noodles, Bean Vermicelli, Japanese Noodle Style and Rice Stick Noodle.
Whenever I’m in Bangkok, I always hunt for sticky rice treats; whether savoury or sweet. I spotted the Mae Napa Sticky Rice series in convenient microwaveable snack packs in flavours like Coconut Cream & Banana, Coconut Cream & Mango, Coconut Cream & Taro and Coconut Cream & Durian (S$1.40 each).
If you’re looking for something tangy to perk you up in the mornings, you can purchase these cute-looking Tamarind Soft Candy by Tamarind House in flavours like Original and Spicy.
Potato chip aficionados will appreciate these 2-in-1 flavoured Lay’s which gives you 2 flavours in a bag. Take your pick between the Fried Chicken Wings & Sriracha Sauce Flavour, Charcoal Grilled Chicken & Somtum Flavour, and Grilled Prawn & Seafood Sauce Flavour (S$1.90 each).
My eyes were blinded by the red bottles as I approached the chilli sauce section. There was a wide range of sriracha chilli and Thai sweet chilli sauces on display.
I even found my favourite Maepranom Brand Sweet Chilli Sauce (S$2 for small, S$4.50 for big), which is absolutely delicious in my opinion.
We also spotted the popular ChaTraMue Brand of Thai milk tea (S$5.50 – S$6.50) and chanced upon unique flavours like Butterfly Pea (S$9.50) and Assam (S$4.90).
There’s also a bunch of Vietnamese products in the last 3 aisles nearer to the cashier section. We found Vietnamese coffee, chilli sauce, instant pho and more.
You can expect a load of F&B outlets including a 64-seater dining area coming by the end of June (stay tuned for our coverage). Amongst them will be Folks Collective which will take up 2 stalls (salads with marinated seafood, and grilled meats and curries).
Another will be Yùng Yùng which will be selling Yaowarat milk buns.
Trust me, there’s more reason to head down to Aperia Mall now other than for Cold Storage and McDonald’s. Let’s all wait in anticipation for their opening!
