First dibs: Luckin Coffee — Famed Chinese brand coffee by World Barista Champions, offering quality coffees
Tired of the bubble teas or the usual coffee chains? Luckin Coffee, located at Marina Square and Ngee Ann City, may be the one to satisfy that boredom.
Luckin Coffee may be an uncommon name here, but definitely not in China. Fondly known as the Starbucks of China, it is pretty much a household name there. We can definitely see why, as the brand promises quality coffee with lowered prices.
A fascinating note would be that the brand has absolutely no cashier! Coming from the tech-savvy China, all drinks from Luckin Coffee are to be purchased through their application. This is rather well thought out, considering that customers could order their drinks beforehand and arrive just in time to collect it. Less communication and more convenience; this is an introvert’s dream come to life.
With coffee blends expertly made by winners of the World Barista Championship, I was pretty excited to try what Luckin Coffee has to offer.
Personally, I was delighted by the iced drinks. With Singapore’s extreme sweltering heat, both made for a wonderful cooling feel. Luckin Coffee’s Iced Coconut Latte (S$6.40) is said to be a must-try, having sold 300 million cups in China. Did you know that this specific latte uses plant-based milk? Lactose intolerant folks, this drink may be your new favourite.
As I took a sip, the tropical coconut flavour burst through, and the taste reminded me of the iconic Mr Coconut drinks. It was unlike any latte I have ever tasted, being on the sweeter side. The creamy coconut taste is thanks to the brand’s very own cold-pressed coconut milk, not at all like the artificial ones in the supermarkets.
For non-coffee drinkers, Luckin Coffee did not forget about you! They have a line of ice blended drinks, also known as the Exfreezo drinks, in flavours like Matcha, Chocolate and even Cappuccino.
The Matcha Exfreezo (S$6.40) surprised me with its rather light matcha flavour. It did not have an intense bitter bite that I assumed it was going to be. For those who prefer sweeter green tea, this is the drink for you.
For the ones worried about the high sugar level, there is no need to fret. Luckin Coffee provides you the choice to customise your sugar level to your needs (just like your favourite bubble tea shop). Rather neat, if I do say so myself.
Intrigued why one of the drinks is in a smaller black cup? As it turns out, there is a reason for that. The Hambella Americano (S$5.60) is from the Little Black Cup series, which uses exclusive premium beans. Coffee connoisseurs are sure to enjoy the other premium Yiracheffe beans, considering that they have won a Platinum medal in the IIAC International Coffee Tasting Competition in 2020.
The other cup would be the Creamy Dreamy Latte (S$6.40), whose adorable name fits the drink’s bill immensely well. That smooth, creamy mouthfeel is thanks to the cold-pressing the milk goes through, which gives a richer flavour. Those worried about tasteless lattes, this is sure not one of them.
As an opening promo, Luckin Coffee offers your first drink at S$0.99, so it would be a shame to miss out on such a deal. I will definitely be back to try more of what Luckin Coffee has to offer, especially the Velvet Latte series.
