First dibs: New Lava Mochi in Salted Egg, Matcha and Chocolate at Thai supermarket snack stall, Baan Kanom Thai
The popular snack stall within Golden Mile Complex‘s Thai supermarket, Baan Kanom Thai, has launched a new, exciting product – Lava Mochi.
Baan Kanom Thai, most famous for its viral Thai Pandan Pancakes, announced the new product on its social media, which comes in three flavours: Salted Egg, Matcha and Chocolate. The Lava Mochis are sold in boxes of six for S$10 each.
As someone who is obsessed with both mochi and desserts with a lava element, I was naturally extremely excited to find out about Baan Kanom Thai’s new product. I headed down to Golden Mile’s Thai supermarket to try the mochi out for myself.
The boxes of Lava Mochi were not showcased in the store’s display case, and there were no signages to indicate that Baan Kanom Thai had a new product. I had to ask the store owners if they had the Lava Mochi, and thankfully, they did!
I got the Salted Egg Lava Mochi and Matcha Lava Mochi, which came served in sturdy boxes and wrapped in cling wrap. The store owner advised me to microwave the cold mochi for 30 seconds for the best experience, as they had been refrigerated prior to my purchase.
Personally, I found that microwaving the room temperature mochis for 10 seconds was enough to get the perfect flowy texture.
Compared to Japanese mochi, which are often coated in corn starch, Baan Kanom Thai’s Lava Mochis were coated in oil to prevent them from being sticky. As such, they were noticeably much oiler.
As a lover of all things salted egg, the Salted Egg Lava Mochi did not disappoint me. The flowy fillings had a strong salted egg profile and managed to strike the perfect balance between sweet, salty and savoury.
The mochi skin itself, on the other hand, was chewy and stretchy, albeit a little firmer and much oilier than the Japanese variations I’m used to. It’s definitely a lot less healthy and more indulgent, but for the incredible novelty of this product, it’s worth it!
The Matcha Lava Mochi was also a fantastic snack, with a very floral matcha taste. Those who prefer sweeter matcha desserts will likely appreciate this mochi for its light tea aroma and delicate sweetness. While the matcha lava wasn’t as rich or bitter as I would have liked, it still satisfied my matcha cravings.
Baan Kanom Thai has once again delivered another snack with tons of viral potential, and though I had to travel over an hour down to Beach Road for these, it was well worth my time. With Baan Kanom Thai already being well-known for their Thai Pandan Pancakes, maybe these Lava Mochis will boost their popularity even more.
