Festival de Cannes Film Week to make its debut in Asia

17 Oct – The inaugural Festival de Cannes Film Week in Asia is set to be held in Hong Kong this November.
Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes, together with Adrian Cheng, founder of K11 Group, are bringing the essence of the world's most prestigious and celebrated film festival to Tsim Sha Tsui's K11 MUSEA from 12 to 17 November 2019.
"The whole world comes to visit us in Cannes every year in May to celebrate the art of film, to discover the latest works of the greatest filmmakers of our time and to check the pulse of the international world of cinema. What we want to do now here in Hong Kong is initiate a different movement," Lescure and Frémaux said in a press statement.
"This event is primarily about reaching out. We want to meet cinema-goers from around the world, but also the people who work here in Hong Kong all year round, the people who are at the heart of this industry: the filmmakers, actresses, actors, producers and local distributors who will be with us during this exceptional week.
"Hong Kong is the ideal place for it. Filmmakers like Wong Kar-wai, Johnnie To, Ann Hui and Tsui Hark have contributed to building the legend of Cannes and we therefore feel honoured to be welcomed here in return."

To be held at the K11 Art House, a total of six films from the Official Selection 2019 of Festival de Cannes will be screened.
Three of the films are from the In Competition section. The first is "Young Ahmed", directed by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, who won the award for Best Director. Second is "Portrait of a Lady on Fire", which won its writer-director Céline Sciamma the award for Best Screenplay. Third is the Italian director Marco Bellocchio-helmed "The Traitor".
The remaining three films come from the Un Certain Regard section: "The Invisible Life of Euridice Gusmão", winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize; "The Climb", winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury's "Coup de Cœur" Prize; and "On a Magical Night" ("Chambre 212"), which won singer-actress Chiara Mastroianni the Un Certain Regard Best Performance Prize.
Apart from the film screenings, three masterclasses will also be held starting from 13 November. The first day itself will feature a special surprise guest.

On 14 November, the Dardenne brothers, members of the very close circle of only eight filmmakers in the world to have won the Palme d'or twice, will be holding a masterclass in their first appearance in Hong Kong.
Finally, on 15 November, Frémaux will be holding a special presentation that provides detailed insight into the inventive works of the Lumière brothers.
