Fat Boss Waffles and Ice Cream has the best of both worlds— yummy gelato ice cream and fluffy waffles. It was an accidental discovery made whilst I was exploring my humble neighbourhood one day with a friend at Ang Mo Kio.
Fat Boss Waffles and Ice Cream is a hole in the wall which you may miss easily. Thankfully, the eye-catching turquoise blue tables and chairs decked outside the shop will grab your attention. You’ll probably spot their cute-looking mascot pasted on their front door. I had a chat with the lady boss and she said it was modelled to resemble her fat husband; how cute is that?
During my last visit, the waffles and ice cream were so well executed that they left a lasting impression on me. I decided to head back to try the other interesting gelato ice cream flavours they offer.
What I tried at Fat Boss Waffles and Ice Cream
Fat Boss Waffles and Ice Cream offers three types of waffles— Classic Waffle (S$4.20), Pandan Waffle (S$5.50), and Nian Gao Waffle (S$5.50). My dining partner and I were looking forward to trying their Nian Gao Waffle but we were disappointed when the server informed us that it had just sold out. Bummer!
To start off our sweet journey, we decided to try their Pandan Waffle first. I had a tough time deciding between the 18 different kinds of colourful gelato options that were spread out in front of me. Their single scoop (S$3.50) and double scoop (S$6.50) prices are quite reasonable if you compare them to other mainstream gelato cafes. I picked Yoghurt Biscoff (+$1) and Mixed Berries Sorbet (+$1). Both of them were premium flavours.
I tucked into the Yoghurt Biscoff gelato first and it was the most divine combination known to man. The slightly acidic notes coming from the yoghurt complemented the rich caramel flavours of the biscoff well.
Next up was the Mixed Berries Sorbet which had a perfect shade of dark pink. I have tried a few sorbets made of berries before, and some of them had quite a sharp taste. Fatboss manages to balance theirs out so well, and every bite lets you experience the slightly chunky raspberry bits that were in the mix. The Pandan Waffle on the other hand was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and was presented in a bright ‘artificial’ green tone. It paired well with the gula melaka sauce but I wish the pandan flavour was more robust.
Remembering how good the Classic Waffle was, I was looking forward to it. We ordered an Ice Cream Waffle Set (S$12.90)— includes one Classic Waffle, two scoops of ice cream (Classic/Premium flavour), and one choice of tea (hot/cold). We chose Green Apple Yakult and Caramelised Banana With Choc Chips which was a new flavour and was highly recommended by our server.
Due to the humid weather and the fact that we were seated outdoors, our ice cream had started to melt pretty fast. The classic waffle was still the same for me as it was on my last visit, perfectly fluffy and crispy, and complemented the maple syrup. The Green Apple Yakult had just the right amount of acidity and reminded me of the small bottled Yakult drinks that I heavily indulged in as a kid. The star of the dish was the Caramelised Banana With Choc Chips— it had the perfect amount of sweetness and tasted so much like the insides of a goreng pisang. I could not stop eating and wished I had a double scoop of it!
For the drinks, we opted for their Caffeine-Free flavours— Honeybush, Mandarin & Orange (S$3.50), and Pomegranate & Raspberry (comes free with the waffle set). We requested for sugar-free drinks to avoid having a sugar high. Both drinks were supposed to be tea-based but they tasted like diluted versions of a fruity iced tea— nothing to shout about.
As the famous saying goes, “There’s always room for dessert”. My dining partner and I decided to try two more items on the menu. We chose the Charcoal Cone (S$1) paired with a single scoop of Yam (S$4.50) gelato as well as the Waffle Bowl (S$1.50) paired with Mao Shan Wang (S$6.50). Absolutely love that both the Waffle Bowl and Charcoal Cone are made in-house!
Besides having a nice colour contrast between the lilac tones of the yam gelato with the jet black colour of the cone, the Yam gelato had a strong taste of taro that wasn’t overly sweet. People who enjoy taro will enjoy this. The black cone was light and crispy, no complaints about that.
Their Mao Shan Wang gelato, on the other hand, blew my mind. The durian taste was intense and it felt like I was eating the actual fruit pulp from a spoon. Topped with what seemed to be actual durian puree, the combination explained why it was the most expensive flavour— so worth it! The waffle surrounding it was crispy and fragrant.
There’s been a gradual increase of waffle and ice cream cafes popping up all over Ang Mo Kio, and Fatboss Waffle and Ice Cream is one of the better ones around, in my opinion.
Your gelato cravings will be satisfied and be prepared to be spoiled for choice. According to my server, their flavours are slightly tweaked every two to three days.
I was in the food and beverage industry for 14 years and I know that service plays an important part of the dining experience. The staff at this humble little cafe have surely been trained well.
Perhaps the only drawback about this place is its seating capacity. With only four outdoor tables and two indoor tables, getting a seat here may be challenging during peak hours and the weekend. I’m glad the heartwarming attitude and smiles from the servers triumph over that.
Besides serving desserts, they also have a Korean menu featuring popular items like Korean Ginseng Chicken Soup (S$10.90) and Army Stew (S$25.90)— good to feed two to four pax.
I can see myself making a repeat visit to this place to try their hot food and stay for the yummilicious waffles.
