The fanned out up-do is the red carpet hairstyle you're about to see everywhere
From Zendaya's bouncy bob to Ana De Armas' bow-tied ponytail, this weekend's 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards red carpet made a convincing case made for statement award season hair. A plethora of stars benched the ever-classic glossy wave in favour of more structural evening 'do; Amanda Seyfried opted for a voluminous vintage-nodding pony while The White Lotus' Aubrey Plaza and Simona Tabasco both veered for a stylish chin-grazing chop. There is one style in particular, however, that has continued to reign the hair category in recent events: the intricate and architectural fanned out up-do.
A close relative of the Golden Globes' chic elevated up-do, this modern slant on the classic slick-back bun takes a traditionally neat and simple style and rethinks its tidy finishing touches. Instead of disguising and concealing the hair's ends for a sleek final look, the fanned out up-do allows these spiky loose tips to sit freely around the clean twist, knot or bun, for an effortlessly undone flare.
Claire Foy and Haley Lu Richardson both showcased various versions of the look during last night's SAG Awards event. Foy's signature brunette hair was brushed back into an orderly side part bun, the ends of her hair in the up-do precisely placed into a neat fan beneath it. Richardson's look felt more in tangent with her The White Lotus character, Portia, sporting a clean centre-swept twist with spiked 'Y2K'-esque ends peering from its side. Despite their differing moods, both looks combined two key characteristics of the juxtaposing hairstyle: a clean and classic bun and intentional-yet-undone fanned out tips.
This weekend was by no means the first time we've seen this structural look take centre stage. Don't Worry Darling star Florence Pugh headlined the BAFTAs beauty category, showcasing an extreme detailed up-do, courtesy of hairstylist Peter Lux. The intensely fanned 'do was created specifically to compliment her vibrant Nina Ricci by Harris Reed gown, a near halo-looking bun which he paired with a modern side-swept micro-fringe.
Lily James and Laura Haddock, both styled by red carpet favourite Halley Brisker, have also recently adopted tousled tips to accompany their traditional red carpet ensembles. And with an array of star-studded testimonies standing in support of the flared ends look, it's safe to assume that the electric fanned out up-do is quickly becoming this season's coolest hairstyle.
