Former member of defunct J-pop idol group SMAP, Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, announced that he was married on 30 December.

In his announcement to the Japanese media, 46-year-old Kusanagi wrote, “I would like to continue working with the same stance as before. With hopes that everyone can continue to support me, I will do my best every day.”

As Kusanagi is very low-profile when it comes to romance, and was not reported to be dating anyone, this marriage was pretty unexpected. According to the people around Kusanagi, his wife is a non-celebrity and she is not pregnant, which rules out the possibility of a shotgun marriage.

It seems Kusanagi was so secretive that even the ones close to him were not aware of his relationship. Apparently, he had been making preparations for the marriage, as a house — the usual form of accommodation for families in Japan, as compared to apartments for singles — was reported to be under construction in the city last fall.

Fur parent to a four-year-old French bulldog named Kurumi that appears frequently on his Instagram, Kusanagi had also intentionally chosen his day of marriage to be on 30 December, the birthday of his beloved canine.

Kusanagi recently starred as a transgender woman in Japanese film Midnight Swan, which was released in Japan in September 2020.
