The first trailer for forthcoming Disney+ series American Born Chinese has arrived.

Starring Everything Everywhere All At Once's Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu, the series is based on Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel of the same name.

It follows teenager Jin (Ben Wang) whose life gets complicated when he meets an exchange student, and the pair become entwined in a battle between Chinese mythological gods threatening everyone on earth.

"The fate of your world hangs in the balance," Yeoh's character Guanyin can be heard saying in the clip."

Oscar-winner Yeoh previously opened up about her involvement in the series in a featurette at D23 expo, promising it would be "badass".

"It's a lot of fun, it's a lot of magic, it's a lot of badass action," she said.

"It is a magical ride, and that's what Disney+ is about, isn't it?"

American Born Chinese will also see the actress reunite with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Destin Daniel Cretton, who directs the Disney show.

Meanwhile, it was a hugely successful night at the Oscars for Yeoh, Quan, and Hsu – with Everything Everywhere All At Once winning big at the awards ceremony.

The mind-bending sci-fi film was up for 11 awards in total, with acting wins for Yeoh (Best Actress in a Leading Role), Quan (Best Actor in a Supporting Role) and Jamie Lee Curtis beating co-star Hsu to Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The film also picked up four more awards, winning Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Director, as well as taking home the award for Best Picture.

American Born Chinese premieres on Disney+ on May 24.
