World's largest Minions-themed area coming to Universal Studios Japan
The Minions are multiplying, and they're taking over Universal Studios Japan in 2017.
The Osaka-based park announced this week it will open Minion Park, the world's largest Despicable Me-themed land, set to include a ride, a toy store, a sweets factory, and a hotel.
Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem, a theater-based attraction, will anchor the new area. Guests will board vehicles designed by supervillain Gru and join him, his three daughters, and the Minions "on a heartwarming and hilarious 3-D ride, where they’ll be recruited for his latest scheme — and become an actual Minion," according to a press release.
The journey will include a run through Gru's laboratory and a quick flight through the air before a crash landing brings riders back to Earth. Minion Mayhem's state-of-the-art visuals will be laser-projected in front of riders upon a 65-foot nano-seam dome surrounding their vehicles.
Similar attractions are currently operating at Universal Studios parks in Orlando and Hollywood, having opened in 2012 and 2014, respectively.
Minion Park will surround the Minion Mayhem attraction, and will feature the aforementioned eateries and commercial spaces with a Minions-focused twist.
"These facilities have already been 'taken over' by the Minions themselves," the press release continues. "[They] journey alongside guests through Minion Park via a winding, center passage."
Cumulatively, the Universal and Illuminations Entertainment franchise which inspired Minion Park has grossed almost $2.7 billion worldwide across three titles.
