Eman Lam remembers Ellen Joyce Loo on the first anniversary of her passing

7 Aug – It's been a year since singer-songwriter Ellen Joyce Loo passed away, and good friend and fellow at17 member Eman Lam recently took to social media to mourn the loss of her dear partner.

On the first anniversary of Ellen's passing, Eman shared a photo of the two of them on Instagram, and wrote, "At this time on August 5, 2018, I was not asleep yet. I'd just finished watching Bob Dylan's concert, and in my heart I was thinking, "It is a blessing to watch this living legend live".

"After the show, I went for a drink, and went back home at two or three in the morning and fell asleep. 7:36am, I suddenly woke up. I saw the clock and didn't understand what "7:36" meant.

"I thought I had fallen asleep until dusk, but when I looked out the window, the sky was bright. It took me a minute to realise that I had woken up by chance, and then I went to sleep. At 12:16pm, I woke up to see the phone and saw a sentence, "Please tell me this is not true." Then my life changed completely.

"August 5, 2018 at 12:16 pm. Do you know? I have changed a lot. If you see me now, you probably won't recognise me, especially my heart. The peace between you and me is the only thing that will not change. Remember that? We were surprisingly calm when we were together. What is the storm, but a breeze that passes by, isn't it? If there is such a link in life, no matter how short is was, we had it.

"I just watched the "Avengers: Endgame". There is this scene with Pepper and Iron Man alone, and she said, "You can rest now, we're gonna be okay." I don't know why it made me feel so upset. I think this sentence is wrong. If you are here, it will be different. I have 18 years of evidence. However, we are powerless when it comes to treating a disease.

"One year, one whole year. I understand that there are many things I didn't understand that has become clearer. When I am 70 and my teeth have all fallen, I will, as we have agreed, be drinking beer at the beach waiting for you. See you there."

Ellen Joyce Loo died after falling from her apartment building in Happy Valley, Hong Kong, on 5 August 2018. The case was classified as suicide. She was 32.
